IFA 2013: Sony launches baffling 65-inch Curved LED TV

So, we haven't got OLED...

Sony has something we weren't expecting to see at IFA 2013, the World's first curved LED TV. We can understand the manufacturers wanting to highlight the flexible nature of OLED technology but surely this is just a product for the style concious.
The Bravia S990A is a 65-inch model with TRILUMINOS tech, the X-Reality PRO picture engine, Dynamic Edge LED backlighting and Motionflow XR 480 as well as built in Wi-Fi. So all the usual stuff, barring the shape.

The Sony marketing blurb states that the slight curve actually allows for for a wider viewing angle but we'll wait until we've had one in for testing before swallowing that.

'we can do it' mentality.

The S990A is equipped with multi-angle, 40W front facing speakers and Sony's S-Force Front Surround technology processes audio signals to create a virtual 5.1 soundstage.

It's up for pre-order in the States already, priced at just under $4,000 dollars so it's considerably less than the 55-inch OLED TVs from LG and Samsung but we're really failing to see the purpose of this product beyond a 'we can do it' mentality.
