Philips OLED806 TV was one of the outstanding TVs in 2021 and for many people it has been the TV of the year for the past 12 months.

So, it’s a tough act to follow but a challenge that the new Ambilight OLED807 TV is ready to take on by actually impressively managing to improve on all the performance aspects of the company’s previous multi-award-winning model.

Available in 48”, 55”, 65’ and 77” screen sizes the OLED807 promises to offer better PQ, better SQ and a new more sophisticated version of Philips’ unique Ambilight technology.

A key element in improving the already excellent picture quality is the new OLED.EX panel offering up to 30% more peak brightness but that’s only part of the PQ story.

The OLED.EX panel is partnered with the 6th Gen version of Philips award winning P5 AI processing suite, now featuring Ambient Intelligence technology to optimise both SDR and HDR images to the ambient light level.

The new Next Gen Ambilight system offers a wider palette of colours and a more accurate connection to the on-screen images to create an even more immersive viewing experience.

Sound is improved too thanks to a new active crossover allowing separate, precise power to be delivered to each of the individual drivers.

Great for movies and sport, the OLED807 is also great for gaming thanks to HDMI 2.1 connectivity with 4K 120 VRR playback in full resolution – with the previous OLED806 models due to be updated to the same specification via a firmware update in the Autumn.

A great TV image – that’s now even better

The new Ambilight OLED TV range is Philips first to feature the latest OLED.EX panel which replaces hydrogen compounds with Deuterium, using it’s more stable, stronger and heavier structure to help reduce vibration, improve heat resistance, permit higher currents and emit a higher brightness.

Peak light output is increased by 30% to just over 1000 Nits.

As an added benefit, the panel also features a smaller screen bezel, reduced from 6mm to 4mm, allowing a more seamless, immersive connection between the onscreen image and the new Next Gen Ambilight system.

The exceptional picture quality of the new OLED807 TVs is also a result of the latest 6th Gen AI P5 processor which adds a number of Ambient Intelligence features to its already awarding winning performance.

Ambient Intelligence uses the power of the single chip processor together with data from the set’s light sensor to adjust brightness, gamma and colour - and all in real time to ensure that contrast for both SDR or HDR content is always fully optimised to the ambient light level in to room.

The system is selectable by the viewer who can prioritise by selecting either Eye Care, Dark Detail Optimization or Colour Temperature Optimization options.

Eye care will lower the intensity of an image in a dark room and increase the intensity of the image for a brighter room. Dark Detail Optimisation will choose the optimal gamma in a dark room and lower the gamma for a bright room while Colour Temperature Optimisation will be based on the warm (D65) white point for a dark room and then will move towards a cooler white point for a brighter room.

The extra power of the 6th Gen AI P5 chip has also allowed the inclusion of a new version of AI Auto Film Mode that extends the number of alternative smart picture modes options from the original two to seven when a movie is detected – including Filmmaker Mode. If the TV is already in Filmmaker Mode the set will also automatically switch to Dolby Vision Dark settings when detecting Dolby Vision content.

Smart picture modes now also contain a new option and AV Forums members will be interested to hear that a new Crystal Clear mode replaces the previous Vivid mode by offering the same ultra-crisp images and rich colours and but with a better more natural balance between sharpness, colour and contrast.

Philips TV continues to be one of very few brands to offer the full range of major HDR formats including: Dolby Vision, HLG, HDR10 and HDR10+ and HDR10+ adaptive compatibility. New for 2022 is the addition of IMAX Enhanced support.

IMAX Enhanced versions of movies use IMAX Digital Media Remastering technology (DMR) to reproduce the highest-quality, sharpest 4K images by utilizing an advanced algorithm to remove image imperfections and present the film exactly as the filmmaker intended – DMR and Philips 6th Gen P5 AI will together optimize that content to its IMAX aspect ratio and to the much higher-quality and higher-brightness of an IMAX Enhanced certified display.

Next Generation Ambilight

Ambilight is Philips unique immersive ambient lighting system that uses rear mounted LEDs to project a continuously changing halo of light on to the wall behind the set.

4 Sided Ambilight Feature 16x9 crop.jpg
The system matches the colours of the on-screen content to give the impression of the image extending beyond the edges of the set, Ambilight also reduces eye-strain - especially during prolonged viewing - and can give the impression of improved contrast.

The OLED807 is one of Philips TV’s first sets to feature a new Next Generation version of Ambilight.

Whereas in the previous version of Ambilight, the rear LEDs were controlled and changed in groups of three, the Next Gen version can control and change individual LEDS, giving a wider colour palette to more precisely match the on-screen image and create an even more immersive effect.

Alternatively, viewers can use the Ambilight system as an exceptionally effective static bias light, which a ‘warm white’ option set at D65.

Great pictures, great sound

The OLED807 also features an upgraded, high-quality and more powerful 70W 2.1 sound system with a dedicated triple ring, rear facing bass driver supported by four passive radiators.

A new active crossover allows power to be delivered to each of the drivers individually, giving better resolution and separation.

Great for movies, sport and games

The OLED807 is also perfect for advanced gaming with HDMI 2.1 capability including: e-Arc, VRR support for 4K from 48Hz to120Hz in full screen resolution and at a full bandwidth of 48Gbps (444, 12 bit) FreeSync Premium and G-SYNC compatibility plus Auto Game and Auto-Low-Latency modes.

An on-screen Game bar gives quick access to picture and sound settings via a simplified menu that allows game settings to be quickly checked or adjusted while gaming. Gamers can also easily enable VRR, NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync™.

Also for extended gaming sessions Philips TV’s unique anti-burn technology protects your investment using an advanced logo detection function to monitor a grid of zones to accurately detect static content and gradually reduce the intensity of its local light output to avoid burn‐in - and without compromising the output of other parts of the screen.

Best of European Design

The OLED807 has a razor thin, zero bezel design with an outside metal frame that allows a seamless connection to the new and improved four-sided Next Gen Ambilight system.

The 48”, 55” and 65” versions of the OLED807 feature an elegant and narrow metal silver chrome arch T-bar swivel stand with the only exception being the 77” model which adopts metal, dark chrome round ‘sticks’ as feet.

Smart duties are handled by the latest Android 11 TV OS offering a slick and intuitive interface with both Google Assistant Built-in – via push to talk on the remote – and Works with Alexa compatibility.

Remote front & back.jpg
A premium Remote Control completes the package with elegant, silver metalized finish and sides and rear wrapped in responsibly sourced leather from Scottish leather specialists Muirhead for the ultimate touch of luxury.

The remote features flush, backlit keys for easy operation in low light levels, with the backlighting activated via a motion sensor that can detect when the RC has been picked up.

... are those available in Dolby Vision and HDR10+ at 120hz?

Any ideas on latency for gaming, always fancied the ambilight but LG is the go to for gaming at the moment.

Has Ambilight finally been fixed to turn off in dark scenes or is it still brighter than the sun when an actor has turned the lights off

Is the improved Ambilight a software thing or a hardware thing ? I would be so happy if it's software related and if it also comes to OLED+936.

I am running a 49" Nano from LG and I want want to upgrade to an Philips OLED - as my gaming setup. I run a 2021 PUS model for TV and movies and the ambilight a lot.

For the LG Nano I have used a HueSyncBox but when the Xbox Series X come on, the SyncBox was obsolete because my Xbox runs on 120Hz all the time.

Do you guys have experience with Xbox Box Series 4k/120Hz?

i'm sorry i have a question, you are saying in this thread that the new philips model 807 and 937
don't fully support 4k 120hz VRR ALLM right? But in a lot of review that i read they say the opposite, for example this review of 807 says that this model support 4k 120hz VRR

"Philips reckons the OLED807 is "perfect" for consoles too, as it supports HDMI 2.1 features such as HDMI eARC, VRR support for 4K@120Hz, FreeSync Premium and G-Sync."

"Two of the four HDMI inputs are at 2.1 standard, so 4K/120Hz, VRR, FreeSync Premium and all the other clever features games consoles thrive on are available."

i'd like to buy the 77 model for gaming so it's important for me to understand if 807 or 937 are a perfect gaming tv, thanks

only in monitor mode right?
Lads you need to set HDMI ports 1 and 2 to optimal vrr and then choose either Game VRR or HDR game VRR modes in order to enable it. The Xbox series will not show the VRR as long as the ports are not changed / set

A friend told once ports set, he is using HDR crystal clear with vrr still working

Yes, the 4k 120Hz in full resolution works properly ONLY in Monitor mode.

I tried it with my PS5 in Ratchet And Clank, here is the result with HDR Game Mode (and every other mode but Monitor) :

Wow, in 15 years with IT and Gaming as a hobby, I never had a situation like now. Guess I’ll just order the 807 and check if VRR / 4K / 120Hz works, if not, I’ll send it back.

None of the official “tests” nor the Philips homepage mentions a resolution decrease with those specs.

Some users write that it works without limitations, others are showing evidence that it doesn’t (monitor mode only? Do I need more if I game on PC?).

I want to use this TV for at least 5 years, so 4K Gaming with VRR will be a thing with my PC, especially now where current and upcoming GPUs are more than capable for it.

Particularly my girlfriend enjoys Ambilight, so I thought I’ll do her a favor and stick to it, but a decrease in the resolution/hz whatever is not an option for me, not for this price.

Some tests seems to mention that you have to be in monitor mode for 4K/120hz.
Like you said, the best way is to try it yourself ! For me though, the monitor mode offers a great picture quality :)

Is it correct the 807 has the EX pannel, but not the heat-sink?
Edit: found it, yes

Yes. Brightness is not significantly different to my 2020 65oled805 though. Maybe it's got more headroom for HDR highlights or panel longevity.

The 806 had black frame insertion BFI, but the seemingly 807 loses this feature? Does anyone know why? as I think it can be a useful feature.

If it's a technical reason due to the panel does that mean LG and Sony using the panels now don't have bfi?
