I've watched the film twice now and sadly it's not upto par. It's a relatively enjoyable visual feat and there are some superb ideas and scenes but as a whole it's only ok, and as a Star Wars film it's weak.
My main issues are due to the film discarding much of the history and what has come before. Director Johnson says it needs to do that to progress. I disagree. I want huge space battles, characters I care for, lightsaber fights like old samurai movies, witty and comedic moments that weren't out of place, and above all a sense of good versus evil. In the pursuit of making the whole thing supposedly neither black or white we've ended up with a grey mush of a film.
Without giving spoilers there are numerous issues that should never have made the final cut.
Finn has no story whatsoever, a complete waste of a journey started in the first film.
Rey progresses but in massive jumps that make no sense and discard the journeys of Luke in 4,5,6 and Vader in 1,2,3.
The First Order is reduced to the Keystone Cops with the new comical Hux and utterly incompent Phasma.
The least said about the "mass Toy Selling Casino World" the better and Del Toro's DJ the better.
The humour is consistently out of place and oh do we lack Han's witty retorts.... It's like someone said it needed to be Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 without that's all out fun.
I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed The Phantom Menace. Which means I'll watch it once in awhile as a curiosity and think of what could have been.
Watched in 2D in Milton Keynes.
