    Teeny hero, huge fun
    Review of Ant-Man Steelbook blu-ray by Coz22998, Jan 8, 2016.
This was a whole heap o' fun wasn't it? Went into this with high expectations and they were most definitely met. The tone throughout was light and fun, even more so than GOTG - the humour was firmly running all the way through its vains, rather than having one-liners pepper an otherwise serious and quite dark film like some other Marvel flicks. Winning characters - Rudd, Pena and the rest of their gang were just hilarious - and a nicely small (sorry) scope made this a breath of fresh air. How Marvel after 12 films can drop something this fresh is testament to their long term game plan and it's one that I'm loving.

For a character that inherently could have been a bit, well, silly, it's treated seriously - no-ones laughing at this teeny weeny man the size of an ant because of the MCU - it's pretty hard not to accept a fella like this when the Avenger are on the news! The ant sequences are done really well (the 3D here helped immensely and really added something) and there's some clever stuff going on with the Quantum Realm too. The cast are superb to a man/woman - I forgot how much I love Michael Douglas when he's on top form and as for a certain Ms Lilly....... All in all, this was an absolute blast from start to finish - if you don't like the MCU, you would still like this. Frothy, witty fun in the best possible way.

The transfer was great - it's been a while since I've watched a film at home in 3D after some less than pleasant experiences with The Hobbit. But this was great - bags of depth really helped give that sense of scale to the ant sequences, with none of the horrible cardboard cut effect seen on Jackson's films. The rest of the transfer was great - bags of detail gave a razor sharp image that was top tier. The 7.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack was pretty good but like AoU there was just something lacking in terms of dynamic range I think. Am sure the BD mix is an accurate representation of the cinematic one, it just could have done with a tad more OOMPH for me (it's better than AoU by the way, I didn't have to turn it up more than I would have normally). Extras? Sorry the whiskey had started to do its thing by then and bed was calling so nope........:boring:

I was reading an article where a certain Mr David Ayer wheeled out the whole "well DC are better than Marvel because they have the better villains" - the charge of Cross being a bit weak was levelled against this. But you know what? It's because the hero's themselves are so blummin' great, it would be difficult to top them!!! After all the films called Ant-Man and it was an utter hoot. Superb entertainment that has shut me up after my rant during my word spew on Prince of Theives that blockbusters had forgotten how to be fun. This was not just top tier Marvel, this was top tier all round.
