Samsung UBD-K8500 User Review

  • AVRAG
Superb start to a new era, and the cheaper option too...
    Review of Samsung UBD-K8500 blu-ray player/recorder by AVRAG, Apr 23, 2016.
A superb piece of kit that works wonders with my JS9000. Not only does UHD Blu-Ray look stunning but HDR is a real game changer.
This is a great option for anyone looking to upscale existing 1080p content too.

This is by no means as flimsy or as cheap looking as some rumours have suggested. It is a solid piece of kit that is worthy of a place among the most expensive of set ups.

My only real user criticism is the lack of information displayed while content is playing. It would be good to see information during playback that displays the current video output and sound format. For example, someone like me has a niggle that needs to see those numbers and formats to be sure it is functioning correctly, but that's just me.

I have not experienced any drop in sound/image, and it has been used to experience, UHD blu-ray, 1080 blu-ray, 3D blu-ray, Netflix, Amazon and Youtube.

Further to note, the signal passes through my RX-V679 via one main HDMI no problem, including HDR.

I gave picture and sound a 10/10 because I believe it is the best it can possibly be at this moment in time.
Everything else scored 9 for dropping 1 point for the following reasons:
Features - lack of information during playback i.e. can't see resolution and sound format,
Ease of use - fiddly remote,
Build Quality - disc tray seems old next to PS4/XOne slots,
Value For Money - £429 is still a lot of money for most.

Finally, I was advised by a RS representative that this would not work correctly with my JS9000 because it isn't a "UHD Premium Certified TV", but that is utter nonsense.
This item was purchased for £429 from Oxford, Richer Sounds in 2016. The reviewer still owns this product.
