Well, we started watching discovery last night, there was me thinking, this is a long recap. Then after about ten minutes I realised I was watching Series 1, Episode 2. Me being stupid and Netflix being a smart arse getting me to watch where we had left it previously. After going through the menus and setting things up correctly we hunker down to Series 2 episode 1, skipping the recap.
HDR kicked in and the picture quality was awesome reminding me a little of JJ Abrams Star Trek 2009. We were reintroduced to Michael Burnham and a little more on her background before being introduced to Anson Mounts Captain Pike and the pace lightened. Oh and the sneeze out was a very gross moment, but funny with a subtle phlegmy build up. I could see where they were trying to make the series a little more light hearted and humorous although I always felt Tilly and Saru were alway able to upbeat what was a very dark series 1.
Story line worked very well with quite a bit being crammed in to what did not seem just over an hour Tilly seeming to get a little more screen time, I really hope they develop this character more in series 2 as Michael Burnham is a dark brooding character with a troubled past. She needs a counterbalance and hopefully Pike, Tilly and Saru will help with this. I still feel though in the back of my mind that they may be trying to please everyone including the long term trekkie fans. Pike being introduced, a sweeping shot of the USS Enterprise and then some teasers of Spock. Do we need a Spock, personally I think not and this may be a bum fidgeting moment for me as he is introduced. Especially if he has a beard!
Still a good start and one I think they have learnt from series 1. They obviously have a big budget and its being used well, definitely looking forward to episode 2.
