Roku 4 User Review

Review of Roku 4 streamer by fxv300, Dec 20, 2015.
still evaluating the product. I have a youtube video

The ROKU4 is a very powerful streaming device. The OS is very simple and the response is very quick. Watching 4K is excellent, there is no delay or tearing in the image. Now available in the UK for viewers to enjoy. No doubt there will be a few other streaming devices available but at present Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV and many other streaming are not as capable as this unit at streaming 4K@60fps over HDMI2.0.

    • Easy to use
    • Best hardware around for 4K at that price

    • Some of the UK channels do not seem to work (BBC Sport, iPlayer)

I've been lazy, sticking to the Apple ecosystem. But when the Apple TV 3 came out and didn't support 4K, I needed to find an alternative as I was keen to stream 4K Netflix on my new Epson LS-10000. After doing the typical Internet research, I settled on the Roku 4. The main competition was the Nvidia Shield but I'm not a gamer so I couldn't see spending the extra dollars on that unit.

The Roku 4 isn't available in Canada yet so I had to order mine from the US. After doing a bit of enquiring, I decided to take a chance on compatibility issues, given that it isn't that expensive.

Setup was a snap. It really was. No glitches at all. Just follow the very easy instructions. Since my AV receiver is new (Denon AVR-X4200W), I didn't have any HDCP issues. The unit worked as advertised right out of the box! How refreshing is that?

The user interface is fine. Snappy with crisp graphics. Streaming channel options are mind-boggling. The remote is cheap-looking (hey, the unit was US$129; they probably sell these things at a loss, making their profit on the streaming service side? Just a guess). I have the Roku in a separate room so noise isn't an issue (seems quiet to me though).

In summary, hard to go wrong with this unit, especially for the price. If you are looking for a 4K streaming device without the need for gaming features, just go and buy one. If you don't need 4K, then the Roku 3, which is about 40% cheaper, would be a good choice.

Thanks Roku for making a product that actually works as it is supposed to, free of drama!
