The Gift User Review

It does indeed keep on giving.....and giving.....and giving.....
Review of The Gift blu-ray by Coz22998, May 15, 2016.
This cracking thriller is a twisty turny guessing game that has a different take on the classic sins of the past returning to bite the hand of a successful young couple (The Hand that rocks the Cradle, Pacific Heights, Fatal Attraction, et al) that funnily enough ends up reminding me more of the similarly excellent Hard Candy.

It's a subtle film without any of the histrionics of those other films I mentioned (Candy not included) that's true strength is its shading it offers to the leads - the outwardly successful yet slightly slimy Jason Bateman and the outwardly odd yet slightly slimy Joel Edgerton. All the way through, you're never sure of who did what or what was done or, well, anything really! No spoilers here, as you need to watch this to get your own answers.

But the cast are uniformly great - Bateman does good slime. He plays on his own image of the affable nice guy really well and when things start to happen, the script offers no easy answers. Even afterwards, Mrs Coz and I were debating who did what and what actually did happen. Suffice to say it's a great little thriller that keeps you guessing right to the very end. And this happens all to rarely these days for me sadly.

The transfer is pretty good. Picture and sound are good without being exceptional. Nice looking and nice sounding. Just nice. Extras are a 2 min EPK (yawn), some naff deleted scenes, an equally short interview with Jason Bateman about "being bad" (!!!!) and actually the only worthwhile extra, an extended ending that adds a little more to the what actually happened ending. Not essential and nothing that changes things massively, but it's nice to see a little more of Gordo than we saw in the main film.

Summary - cracking fillum that shows a typical thriller in a hugely clever and sophisticated way. Great leads, great twists, just great. Disc is nowt special but it shows the film as well as it could and that's all that matters. Hugely recommended.
