Sony STR-DN1080 User Review

Great sound, not all perfect though
Review of Sony STR-DN1080 AV Receiver by SunnyIntervals, Feb 21, 2018.
I can't fault the sound, I don't pretend to be an expert but this amp delivers a very full, rich sound in my opinion. It doesn't get bogged down in offering dozens of different sound fields, it keeps it simple and from what I can see it picks up Dolby, DTS, etc and adjusts accordingly so you get the best sound from your source.

My only real gripe is that, while it works well and sounds good, the built in chromecast audio will only work with 2.0ch stereo or all channel stereo, you can't use any sound fields to spread the music around the room. The other "issue" is that there is no easy way to check the input the amp is receiving. The input scrolls across the screen when it first detects it, but after that you can't double check that all is well. It's not a big deal, but sometimes it's nice to know for sure that the amp is receiving what you think it should be.

    • Great sound, fills the room with a rich solid audio
    • It's a nice looking unit!
    • Set up is simple with the included mic for calibration
    • Uncluttered remote
    • Built in WiFi (also supports ethernet)

    • Chromecast audio only works in stereo (no sub) or all channel stereo (with sub)
    • Not easy to double check the audio input, I guess you just need to trust it's all working how it should!
    • A bit slow to change input, which can cause it to auto-switch to a different input
