Sony MDR-HW700DS User Review

    Excellent headphones
Review of Sony MDR-HW700DS headphones by geogan, Jan 26, 2016.
Best headphones I have ever bought.

The sound quality for any DTS-MA or Dolby TrueHD movie track is outstanding.

Absolutely ZERO hiss, hum or other noise you normally hear from cheap wired or wireless analog stereo earphones (like previous wireless analog Sony ones I used).

If you have previously or still use the type of earphones that plug into the "phones out" analog earphones jack of your AV amp then you have not heard anything comparable to these.

If you further use the cheap analog wireless transmitter type earphones which have horrible hiss when turned up medium to high levels then you need to get these. In quiet passages of music or film it is like they are OFF - no noise whatsover.

These use a completely digital path from master audio on disc through HDMI to digital processor and wirelessly transmitted to headphones digitally too and only inside headphones is the single D/A conversion done so sound quality is maintained to highest degree possible.

And then when a loud passage or especially any subwoofer frequencies like loud explosions etc. come these phones produce absolutely head vibrating and shaking loudness - way more and better bass than any room based real subwoofer can produce without waking the entire apartment block and setting off every alarm!

Negatives? Well the virtual surround effect, while it works kind-of when you for example run those speaker position tests with sound coming out of different positions, it sort of gets lost in actual movie, so not as positional as real 7.1 surround system.
The three small buttons to change input source, sound mode and on-screen menu are a bit hard to find so you press the wrong one by mistake.
Also the fact that this control box has only 3 HDI inputs and one HDMI output makes integrating it into your AV system a bit fiddly. Where to put it? Before AV amp and use AV amp with sinlge input for all your devices? Or after av amp output and have no switching on headphones for inputs then?
This item was purchased for $417.45 USD from Smartimports in 2014. The reviewer still owns this product.
