Oppo UDP-203 User Review

    Don't believe the hype. It has major problems.
    Review of Oppo UDP-203 UHD Blu-ray Player by HP Deskjet, Jan 25, 2017.
    The new Oppo 203 has major problems. One of main problems is that for many owners it simply cannot play 2D, 3D or 4K discs without the unit completely freezing during play back. This is my current situation and it happens with every disc I put in the unit. Reinstalling the latest firmware doesn't resolve the issue. Sound drop outs are also a big issue with the Oppo 203, as is 3D and 2D judder. Oppo itself seem to be rather nonchalant about bringing out firmware updates to resolve any of these issues.

    I find it utterly astonishing that the writer of this review https://www.avforums.com/review/oppo-udp-203-4k-ultra-hd-blu-ray-player-review.13335 gives this new 4K player from Oppo a 9. Its brushed aluminium box that houses the componemts looks very nice, it's just a pity that the components are not working properly for many buyers. You could call the Oppo 203 4K blu-ray player a case of 'fur coat and no knickers'.
    This item was purchased for €969 from www.jvbdigital.com in 2017. The reviewer still owns this product.

      Are you sure you don't have a faulty unit? You're returning it for a replacement, right?

      @Stuart Wright

      It sounds very much like that in his case. There is not a single thing that works in his unit. However, there are load of similar complains in the owners' thread. He just got greedy and collected them all. :)

      I've contacted the retailer today. He suspects that it might be an overheating issue with the unit and is more than willing to test it and/ or replace it. He is also aware that the new 203 does have certain issues that Oppo are working on to resolve. He's getting in touch with James at Oppo's technical dept. in the UK to discuss this issue.

      In the meantime, I've advised the retailer that I'll wait for the next software update to see if that resolves the freezing issue. I'm also going to test the player for overheating by removing it from the AV tower it's currently in and playing a disc with the player freestanding for ventilation purposes. If it still freezes then it's more than likely an issue with the player itself overheating.

      The judders are definitely a problem. I experience them, too, especially in 3D. First I thought it was problem caused by a configuration mismatch on my LG E6 TV, but after trying out all kinds of settings and disabling all the picture improvement functions on the TV, the judders are still there. Hope Oppo knows about the problem and releases a fix soon.
