Apple TV 4K User Review

Best Apple TV so far, great performance, missing just a couple of things
Review of Apple TV 4K Streamer by FreddyW, Apr 24, 2018.
I love the new 4K Apple TV. I upgraded from the 2nd gen unit which was just 720p. I couldn't warrant upgrading to the 3rd or 4th gen models as I didn't really use it that much apart from the occasional film. The addition of 4K, HDR and the AppStore in the new Apple TV made me finally go for it. Apple's 4K iTunes films are great and it's awesome that they are the same price as HD. My only wish was that it supported 4K HDR on YouTube as Apple doesn't support the VP9 codec. The VP9 codec does use less storage space and bandwidth which is why Google uses it, but it introduces more visual artefacts and requires a fair chunk more processing power to decode compared to mp4 video using h.264/5. It looks like Apple is sticking with mp4 for quality reasons but it's a shame they can't support VP9 as well as I don't see Google budging anytime soon.
This item was purchased for £179 from Apple in 2017. The reviewer still owns this product.

    • 4K HDR movies on iTunes are great and at a good price
    • AppStore means Apple TV can do more than ever

    • Just a tiny bit too expensive compared to the competition
    • Doesn't support VP9 codec required for 4K on YouTube
