Panasonic DP-UB820EB user review

  • Great player, not the best for everything, but easy to use and solves many issues in a user friendly way.

I mainly bought this player as wanted to make my projector HDR performance better. I like Panasonic players and have had 4-5 over the years, but do recognise them for what they are, quite clever, good performance, regularly updated, but they do have some idiosyncratic ways of doing things. When I bought it, Oppo no longer made DVD players, so without spending stupid money it was a good player.

    What I like:

It plays DVDs fast, it plays them well, it has HDR Optimisation and has some online apps.

What I don’t like so much:

No source direct, i.e. 1080p output at 1080p & 4k output as 4k etc, with HDR optimisation I have to keep tweaking depending on the content to get what I want, i.e. it’s not always automatic, the online apps Netflix, Amazon etc do not seem to be as clever or fast as the apps on my Apple TV 4K and the top get scratched very easily from just resting DVD boxes on top of it.

Conclusion, it’s a very reasonable player at a very reasonable price, it does many things very well and I do like Panasonic DVD players. It’s not an Oppo and Oppo do some AV focused things like source direct that AV enthusiasts want. I don’t think Panasonic know or care what AV enthusiast are and instead aim at having as many badges on the box as possible that will help Currys sell it..
