Stupendous sequel to arguably the best ever Pixar film (that isn't about toys coming to life). The 14 year wait was definitely worth it as Brad Bird has clearly chosen to make this at the right time with the right story, as opposed to simply crapping out any old rubbish to make money off the brand. Once again, the focus on family is front and centre but with the roles reshuffled and reorganised, this time bringing the ladies to the forefront. Specifically, Helen Parr/ Elastigirl and Violet, amoung others. Here is their chance to really shine, and it's fantastic to behold. Inevitably, this means less screen time for Mr I and Dash but it doesn't matter because its the family unit, as always, that's ultimately important and how they all work together to acheive the same goal and protect each other. It would have been easy to repeat the 'dysfunctional' dynamic from the first film and have them be arguing all the time, but in this case everyone is trying to help each other even if it means coming out of their comfort zones and undergoing some role reversals.

Does it equal/ top the original? Maybe, maybe not; it lacks a villain as brilliantly conveived and entertaining as Syndrome; and it doesn't have the freshness of the first film's excellent deconstruction of superhero and Bond villain tropes. However the story direction is inventive and doesn't retread the first film, and the characters all somehow seem even more likeable. I've been rambling about the characters and not mentioning the action but rest assured; the film delivers to easily the same level as the best in the live action part of the genre. Oh boy does it deliver. The climax is maybe not as epic as the triple whammy finale of the first film (Island fight, city fight, syndrome showdown), but all the action scenes are thrilling, imaginative and utterley engrossing. The humour and supporting characters dont disappoint either. Other MPVs include Edna, Jack Jack and Frozone plus some cool newcomers. Also it looks incredible- no pun intended. Keeps the same aesthetic as the first film, but the advances in CGI make it look exponentially more impressive visually, and with several inventive visual styles. Short film Bao is wonderful too.

The Incredibles is on constant rotation in our household so was really looking forward to this. And it delivers - loved it. The Bao short was absolutely wonderful too.
