I'm sure I saw a thread somewhere saying that the R3 version of Zatoichi was non-anamorphic but can't seem to find it now.

Anyway, I've just received my copy from CDwow and I am pleased to say that it is indeed enhanced for widescreen TVs.

I think the thread was in the DVD Bargains forum, but it looks like it's disappeared.

CD-Wow has changed the info on the website to reflect that it's now anamorphic, but has also increased the price to £11.99.

The film was also number 1 in their DVD list, but is now not even in the top 75 (as far as I can tell).

The thread on the film (saying it was £8.99 and various people saying they got it from as low as £5.49) has been removed.

Non capisco... although one could speculate that CD-Wow has had to act for some reason.

Either way, it arrived yesterday, so I'm happy :D

I don't pay attention to CDWow's product description as it has never been accurate.

Besides, it is rare for a dvds to be non-anamorphic nowadays.

Anyone know how this version compares to the Japanese version?

I was going to buy that version, but at £22 ish, was a little too rich for my taste.

Even at 11.99, it's still a good buy.

Asian DVD's usually list a combined running time for both discs if it's a 2 disc set.

Someone on another forum said they compared it to the Japanese disc (side by side) and the picture quality was exactluy the same, although the subs on the HK disc were taller + thinner. The HK disc has DTS too.

It wouldnt surprise me it being out of the top 75 because at £7 or whatever i paid for it, it is worth a risk but for £12 it is not risking whether you will like it or not.

Anamorphic, DTS (not on the Japanese disc) and a very nice set (with 3 postcards thrown in).

    Great film too.

    I loved it! :D

Takashi Miike would approve. I thought it was like a Japanese version of Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge! :D

When did that start? :) I saw that yesterday and thought the guy was taking a liberty by trying to sell his stuff on Ebay :D

Personally, I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than buy from Ebay. Might be a good idea to link directly to a DVD for sale.

Good idea though if it helps the site.

Agreed increasing price would impact on sales, but dropping from number 1 in the multi-region list to being completely out the top 75 within a few days is a bit odd.

Your price comparison is also unfair since £7 is a discounted price. With links/vouchers, people can currently buy the 2-disc set for under a tenner.

I received the R3 yesterday and having had a quick look at it, it's not a patch on the R2 Japanese disk. For £6.99, however, who am I to complain? ;)

I've seen both and the only difference I could see was there were more extras without subtitles on the Japanese disc and it's 3 times the price. And the HK versions comes with 3 postcards (oh, and a super DTS track of course).

I didn't think that the picture quality was as high on the R3 disk, but I only had a quick spin of it to make sure it was anamorphic.

The packaging is nowhere near as nice as the Japanese release, but at a fraction of the price, who's complaining?

I too had the Japanese disk and sold it, but I've just re-bought it again. :zonked:
