Why is the interface on pretty much all of these 3rd party media boxes so horrendous?? Just hire a decent UX designer.

Having used multiple streaming boxes over the years I find the Zappiti to have the most user friendly interface of all of them

Great review, do they have plans to add streaming apps like Netflix 4k and Amazon Prime 4k?

Good review. Do you know if the player 'auto-detects' 4k/HDR content vs HD and outputs natively? I have a hi media Q10 that requires a manual change in the home menu to HD or 4k resolution meaning it upscales or downscales all content at source, which i don't want it to do. Would just like it to output files at their native resolution.

You should talk about the interface on standard bluray players! If Oppo, or anybody else, was able to come up with a decent interface then there'd be no reason to bother with Zappiti etc...

For folks who just hate Kodi (me) this looks like it could be an ideal solution. Thing is not really much UHD content for these things so spending this sort of money would be sheer folly at this point ...

"In terms of upcoming features, we are told that very soon owners can expect full Blu-ray menu support"

If true, that is welcome and unexpected. As a Mini and Duo owner I'm pretty much delighted. The marque seems pretty reliable to me on the whole and I can't say that about any other streamer I've tried in the last 18 months.

The thing just works, so no folly regardless of the price. Check out the prices of the current Dunes and Popcorn Hours. I've had both and neither are as good.

So they use the same chipset.

But not the same build, interface or reliability.

if we're being honest most people buying this will be using it for pirated UHD content. Everything originally on Amazon, Netflix, Sony, etc is available, along with 10bit h264 rips of all the 4k blurays.

Whilst the device would be capable, there's pretty much zero chance of Netflix certifying it.

Can I rip my bluray collection to this device? I know virtually nothing about media players:blush:

It doesn't rip files but you can rip on your PC and it will play the ripped files.

Forget it for Netflix and Amazon, even though you could install Kodi and those apps, this machine is all about local file playback.

i can't understand why anyone would want one of these, let alone pay £400

If you have bluray and sky what's the point?

I've got an Oppo bluray player but the interface, including poster wall, on the Zappiti is far superior. Plus if you rip your files to MKV then you can easily play them on various devices. Physical disc alone is more limiting and frankly less convenient.

Plus you do not need to pay £400 for the Duo.

I have both Blu ray and Sky but this has replaced 3 servers and multiple different hard drives. Best £340 I've spent on a piece of kit for my cinema room hands down

Discs are old hat Digital files save space, MKV files are a lot quicker to load up

I've not seen one mention of the Shield in the review or comments! Surely it's ripe for comparison....... and its waaaaaaaay cheaper.

      Hi,

I got my zappiti 4k HDR one yesterday.
It came with Firmware 3.05 already installed, and i can confirm that most of my mk3d (MKV MVC) does NOT work, and stays pure flat 2D.
I tried a factory reset, but still the same problem.

Over 30 mk3d files, only 5 are actually displayed in 3D with the Zappiti.

Just to mention, they all works flawlessly on a popcorn A500 and on a Zidoo X8

Does this have its own media player built in or do i need to download kodi or MK player to view them ?

i want a player to replace my WDTV but the WDTV has its own media player so its click and go.

I wish WDTV would bring out a media player with 4K support etc

      Cheers for that, very helpful
Thank you, so rip via something like handbrake (I have a mac not a pc but I'm sure the same thing applies)? How do you then transfer the file from mac to this device? Do you have to physically connect both or can it be done over my home wifi?

I scanned the comments but must have missed it, so yours was the only one, it's an unbelievable price when there's something like the Shield which is under half the price and can do more.

Yeah but ISO playback is one of the main reasons for buying a media player for me and the shield just can't do that with 3D
The shield was so close to perfection...

You can transfer via wifi if you want but I have both my PC and Zappiti players hard wired to my router. The second Zappiti is connected via home plugs. File transfer is quick and easy.

You are not comparing like with like. The Shield is more comparable with the Zappiti Mini that doesn't have the enclosure for drives. That is nearer 220 quid I think. I have had five maybe six Shields in the last year and couldn't get them to reliably work. I'm not sure the latest firmware actually makes it perfect either judning by the request for help posts.

The extra things it can do such as Netflix HDR and the apps I can do on my TV which has DV capability and all the catchups unlike the Shield. I couldn't care less about games on a media streaming device and have an Xbox anyway. The only thing that could tempt me back to a Shield is if Spot integration turned out to be anything good.
