Mark, thanks for the review. We're there any audio dropouts on Dolby Atmos material?

      Hi

Atmos wasn't properly tested, sorry, but I had no issues with True HD. Are you having issues?

Thanks for this very detailed review, saves me a lot of time as I won't consider it given its too many limitations.

Regarding what else to buy, the upcoming Dune 4K Solo (to be available in the next few weeks) is a much better choice with support of full BD menus in 2D and 3D, support for HEVC 10bits, etc. Unfortunately, no HDR support, but given the lack of legitimate content that's not really an issue right now. The 4K solo should definitely be in your list of alternatives.

      Hi Manni

I've contacted Dune to ask for a sample but I've not had anything back on that yet. Fingers crossed they come through and we can list it as an alternative.

Great review Mark. Had my eye on the Zappiti players for a while and might take a punt on one soon.

I have one of the older Dune Smart players, which for me has been flawless for 2D material, including all HD audio, but has some issues with Atmos (and I expect DTS:X), but only with seamless branching titles I believe. (3D playback not a big deal for me personally).

If I were [forced] to update to a 4k player it might be this one, but not if there are audio issues, but it's a completely different chipset, and hopefully there won't be any such issues. I'll use the Dune player until it dies in reality, it's what's the next player (I don't think I would get on with things like the Raspberry Pi, as I need something a bit more plug-&-play).

Edit: I should add, as a 'non-4k PJ' owner (and not likely to own one in any sort of near future), the audio ability is more important than the 4K ability.

I thought the shield would have sorted it, but these things just compound the fact that having an HTPC is much better

And for official support for this player as well as feature or update timeline, you go where?

You go to the Zappiti support forum of course :p
      Zappiti closed their Support forum

If the prior level of support is anything to go by I doubt I will be getting the new player unless they really prove themselves, but I can't see that being the case unfortunately. So my most likely next media player will be the Dune Solo 4K rather than this one.

Thanks for the review Mark, i have the Zappiti 4k player since a year back and i`m really pleased with it. Too bad the chipset lacks 10-bit playback but other than that, it works really well.

Can media streamers still play BD menus? I thought this was a feature stripped out following licensing issues? If so, this could be a useful successor to my Dune HD Duo and Smart H1. :)

That's the USP of the Solo 4K. Mediaplayers had to drop full Menus when cinavia was introduced which meant we had to choose between old players with full menus or new players with 4K and 3D but no menus. Dune managed to support everything with full BD menus for the first time in a modern player. Might tempt me away from my HTPC...

As Manni01 says full Blu-ray menu support is going to be unique (at least for a while) to the new Dune Solo 4K. Although there is limited support on some Android players and a paid for subscription option but I've not tried either so can't comment on how well they work.

The Zappiti looks an excellent box that will do most of what I want. Being passively cooled and fanless has to be a winner over Dune's Duo 4K fan assisted box. My last Dune was rejected due to the overly noisy fan ... the only negative point on an otherwise good player. Cannot abide noise from players.

The current Dune Solo is not remotely noisy. In the three months that I had mine I never once heard it. I only got rid of it since they quietly dropped Android after having promised it.

Glad to hear ... just saying my Dune HD Base 3D was simply awful. A fan so loud it could be heard in the next room!

Having had a Dune HD Smart D1 for some time - with the accompanying limitations - I'm now in the market for a replacement. I have a home Gigabit network, with most video files stored in BDMV format on a 12TB QNAP server in RAID10 (so 6TB effective storage). So, the slow ethernet port on the D1 often proves an issue.

I was initially excited to see the new Zapitti range as a possible replacement - but the results above have put me off. Instead, I've been looking with great interest at the Egreat A10 - which appears to address many of the issues observed for the Zappiti. Has anyone else looked at this unit/got any comments?

Apologies in advance if considered off-topic by mods - feel free to move it to media players section if necessary...

      @HenryHonda
This a thread for the older Zappiti series. The newer HDR series which has been available since the turn of the year works pretty much without issue for me.

      Hi.
      Need some help.
Thinking of upgrading my Mede8er Med800X3D to a Zappiti One 4k.
I have a 2Tb HDD full of movies and series...
Can anyone tell me if it's possible to simply swap the disk from the mede8er to the zappiti and it will immediatly recognise the movies and tv series???
And by the way, does anyone knows if there will be any upgrade that will make the Zappiti Dolby Vision compatible?
By the way...do you think I will be better served in terms of picture quality?

Does anyone know if you can connect a non powered (portable) 2.5" external usb hdd to the 4k mini hdr players?

      Thanks in advance.
