YouView on Humax FOX T2 ??!!

Noticed Humax are realeasing a new model with this "YouView" function which gives, BBC Iplayer, ITV, C4 and C5 via broadband.

I have a Fox t2 and in tv portal option all we get is BBC Iplayer.

Is there are reason why Humax couldn't simply add the other on demand tv channels to the fox t2 unit?

Am I missing something really obvious here?

Thanks for explaining that.

The PS3 has BBC I player, ITV and channel 4 on demand.

Sony TVs have demand-five and iPlayer !!

Apart from the chip maybe having problems, or the delivery being sub-optimal (slow), it would probably be possible for the T2 to have these catchup services made available with some effort by Humax

but . . .

Humax make the YouView boxes so they may not be inclined to lessen their YouView sales by making the catchup services available (albeit without the past 7 day EPG function, Film/Pay services, IPTV etc.) on an existing product at their extra cost !

They have also stated they will not be adding any interactive channels either if I remember correctly.

It is perfectly possible to add all the on demand catch players to the Fox T2 in their portal, however Youview is more than simply the addition of all the catch up services.

1. Youview allows a standised IPTV delivery platform for the UK, at the moment a specific player needs to be developed for each product then each product certified, on Youview the IPTV standards means only one player need be developed and it can be deployed across all certified product.

2. The iPlayer, ITV Player etc catch up services are integrated into the EPG allowing 7 day scroll back thus content in all players can be access from a single interface.

3. Content is searchable across the whole EPG for future programming and past programming on the catch up services.

4. Youview includes secure features for delivery of pay services.

It's all the extra features that Youview brings that require much more processing power thus the simply provision of IPTV players, and thus a Youview software upgrade will never come to the Fox T2.

Right thats a very full explanation-thanks very much. It does make me see that Youview is a significant step forward in technology. I am sure sky must be feeling a little behind.

Is you view HD?

Search only works for vod content and only works if you have an internet connection.

From all reports the pvr aspect of the box isn't very good, lacking many features that the HDR FOX T2 already has.

Do you know which features are lacking from the box? I was interested in the Youview box and naively assumed that it would be the same as the HDR Fox T2 plus the Youview features.

If only :D If it was I would have ordered one.

Briefly

No folders, No epg search, no manual timers, no dnla streaming, no autopadding, no programmeable skip keys, no manual tuning for those in awkward areas, apparently no buffering for slow broadband connections, no usb archiving to name a few :D

The software is written by Youview, essentially Humax just provide the hardware and the links to the hardware control functions.

That's a shame as the Youview box looked reasonable value if it was based on a fully-functioning Humax HDR-FOX-T2.
I don't expect Youview to be around long enough to provide any long term support either! Perhaps when they discount the box down to £100 it will be better value.

If the software is indeed supplied by Youview and the features dictated by them, then I can't see other manufactures getting involved in the direct to consumer retail market for sale in shops/online.

I can understand Youview wanting the GUI to be similar, but if they are not allowing the manufacturers to add features they have in their existing PVR's then I can't see Youview being a success, which would be a shame as it held so much promise.

I'm hoping this might just be a case of basic beta software to get it launched ahead of Olympics, and that more features will follow now in software updates.

Just spotted a value for money way to get a Youview box for some customers.

Talktalk have a broadband TV service which is offering a "free" Youview box in the Autumn. This seems good value if you need a new broadband service and live in their cheap areas.

Unfortunately, this will be unavailable or expensive if you are on a rural exchange. I can only get BT or Plusnet. Tiscali/Talktalk made it very expensive as they don't want rural customers as they are expensive to provide for. (going off topic here, needs to be in the broadband forum!)

Personally I see youview seemingly merging with freeview, both have similar things and I think its intergration of vod is the future for the service and freeview will probably imitate it. Youview would be stupid to not allow extra features and humax aren't the only manufacturer so i think there is some flexibility to allow features otherwise no one would bother making them. I really think the humax is a showcase and as someone mentioned it seems like the software was all youviews doing, hopefully they will get a bit of creative input in software updates for this or not rest on their laurels and get another box with the hdr's features in tow underway for a release not too far down the line

I'm not interested other than to ask whether BT Option 1 BB would be sufficient to run YouView. I suspect not as Option 1 only allows 10GB/mth. And I used nearly half of that just surfing and occasional Youtube videos. Obviously BT would like you to take their 'unrestricted' BB option.

Check with bt, i think on bt vision the on demand content is exempt from you have limits so youview may be the same
