The "My top 10 movies" thing has been done to death, but here's a little twist on the tale that makes it a little bit more difficult. The challenge here is that you can list your favorite movies, but you're limited to only one movie within each genre. This should (in theory anyway) make it a little more difficult especially if you're only a fan of a particular genre (or a few particular genres, but not others).

    Here's the categories:

    Adventure
    Animation
    Fantasy
    Comedy
    Crime
    Documentary
    Drama
    Horror
    Family
    Martial Arts
    Mini-Series or Series
    Music-based
    Non-English Language
    Romance
    Sci-Fi
    Sports
    Superhero
    Thriller/Suspense (non action-based)
    Thriller/Action (action-based)
    Western
    War (WW2 or earlier)
    War (Vietnam or later)
I split the last category because... oh, because I like war films, and it's my bloody thread, OK? :)

(You MIGHT wanna copy the above to make it easier for you to fill in the blanks - end of public service announcement)

My own picks follow in the next post. 'Ave fun.

    My picks:

Adventure: Easy one to start with, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Throwback to the golden age of cinema and the Saturday Morning Serials.

Animation: I would pick The Animatrix, but it's a bunch of short stories in one. Tough, as this isn't really a genre I'm that "in to". While I admire Pixar's works, I personally have to say that The Lion King was the movie that really revitalized the animation industry, and it remains a great one for keeping the brats occupied for a while.

Fantasy: Easy - LOTR, and if I have to pick only one, ROTK.

Comedy: I'm not really a big comedy fan insofar as movies are concerned usually, but very hard to look past Animal House.

Crime: Really tough call. Flip a coin, and Goodfellas came out just ahead of Godfather II.

Documentary: Mr Moore may keep his sensationalism, Sir Jeremy Isaacs' The World at War remains the standard by which all other documentaries are judged.

Drama: Conspiracy, with Kenneth Branagh and Stanley Tucci. Maginficent acting, chilling subject. Have to give an honorable mention though to The Big Kahuna - Danny DeVito proving he too is what we already knew Kevin Spacey was, an actor who really knows his craft.

Horror: OK, I'm not a big horror fan, so I'm gonna cheat (maybe, depends on your viewpoint) and say Alien.

Family: The Princess Bride. Great for kids, but some good "Python-Lite" stuff for the grown-ups too.

Martial Arts: Can't look past the master himself - Enter the Dragon.

Mini-Series or Series: Band of Brothers. Simply astounding.

Music Based: Another really tough one. Musicals per se don't interest me, but you can't call something like the Wizard of Oz anything less than sheer genius. However, as it's not really "my bag", I have to go a different direction and say I just LOVE Almost Famous.

Non-English Language: Das Boot. Got myself out of jail here, as it would have made my choice of WW2 movie even harder! What Wolfgang can do when he really turns his mind to it.

Romance: I don't really go for schmaltzy ones, so I need something to add a bit of comedy to the occasion. When Harry Met Sally - the queen of RomCom at the peak of her cuteness powers with the perfect foil to keep it from getting too mushy.

Sci-Fi: Let's make this simple - Star Wars: A New Hope. Feel free to copy and paste, as this is the only acceptable answer to this question in any case (well, other than The Empire Strikes Back), and please move on to the next category.

Sports: A really tough one again, mainly because there haven't really been a lot of great sports movies. I think though that I could watch the original (non-Sandler) The Longest Yard (aka The Mean Machine) over and over again.

Superhero: Batman Begins was very, very good, but Batman Returns holds the title in my book. TB shouldn't have been able to surpass Jack's joker, but he came up double trumps with little Danny and Michelle P's catwoman (are you watching, Ms. Berry? THAT is how you do Catwoman - pure sex dripping from every pore).

Thriller/Suspense (non action-based): I'm a fan of the genre, I was already a fan of the book, and The Hunt for Red October didn't disappoint me. That said... I can't in all truth give this one to anything but Silence of the Lambs.

Thriller/Action (action-based): Can't say better than Bruce & Alan Rickman in the Die Hard. The perfect wise-cracking cop vs. the perfect sneering Eurotrash villain. Arnie & Sly may have had bigger biceps, Willis had the better material.

Western: High Noon changed everything (and created a whole new kind of hero). Close call though - Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday in Tombstone was just as memorable, a career performance.

War (WW2 or earlier): Ouch. Really hard call for me personally, as it's probably my favorite genre. Saving Private Ryan deserves a mention, but I personally thought it was a great movie but not QUITE as great as everyone made it out to be. My personal choice would have to be The Great Escape (stop it... stop whistling... no, come on, I know it's catchy, but... oh come on, stop it!!!), but I have to also admit a real weakness for movies like Battle of the River Plate (I MUST get this on DVD eventually), Battle of the Bulge and (a real favorite) Where Eagles Dare which may not be artistic masterpieces, but of which I have fond memories of watching with my parents on Sunday evenings before bedtime (the BBC now being too limp-wristed to put such material on in "family viewing" time).

War (Vietnam or later): Rather unsurprisingly I think, I have to say Apocalypse Now. Black Hawk Down gets an honorable mention for sheer realism in depicting how chaotic and unglamourous war really is.

Good idea! Here's my stab at each - difficult in some cases to interpret though, as there will be some movies which fall into several categories. So don't tell me that e.g. Dances With Wolves isn't a Western (which it might be and it might not :) ) - I just didn't know where to put it.

Adventure - Raiders of The Lost Ark
    Animation - Finding Nemo
    Fantasy - LOTR ROTK
    Comedy - Fargo
    Crime - Goodfellas
Documentary - can't think of any at the moment!
Drama - One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
    Horror - The Shining
    Family - Forrest Gump
    Martial Arts - Hero
Mini-Series or Series - Band of Brothers
    Music-based - Moulin Rouge
    Non-English Language - Das Boot
Romance - Four Weddings and a Funeral
Sci-Fi - The Empire Strikes Back
    Sports - Seabiscuit
    Superhero - Spiderman 2
Thriller/Suspense (non action-based) - can't think of one here either!
    Thriller/Action (action-based) - The Usual Suspects
    Western - Dances With Wolves
War (WW2 or earlier) - The Great Escape
War (Vietnam or later) - Full Metal Jacket

Failed miserably with the "only one movie within each genre" bit...sorry, but it was just too difficult to choose in certain categories. However, I've highlighted my main choices and any others I've included in the same genre are snapping at the leaders heals - often changing depending what mood I'm in!

Adventure - King Kong (1933) Raiders of the Lost Ark

Fantasy - Dragonslayer / LOTR / Jason and the Argonauts
Comedy - Airplane / Schlock / This is Spinal Tap / Take the Money and Run / Play it Again Sam
Crime - Rififi / Goodfellas / Once Upon a Time in America
    Documentary - Hearts of Darkness
Drama - The Right Stuff / Magnolia / House of Sand and Fog / Ordinary People
Horror - The Exorcist / Bride of Frankenstein / An American Werewolf In London

    Mini-Series or Series - X Files
    Music-based - The Last Waltz
Non-English Language - La Belle et la Bete
    Romance - Manhattan
Sci-Fi - The Thing / Blade Runner / Alien / Star Wars trilogy (you know which one)

If I look at this tomorrow, I'll probably change my mind.

    How about:
    1. Fill in all categories with the fewest films. Can it be done with one film? Bearing in mind the last 2 categories, it would have to be an epic or involve time-travel.
    2. Worst in each category?

Actually, when I was typing the title, I put "X" rather than "XXX" for that very reason. Besides, I wouldn't have wanted to be responsible for you lot deciding this was a question that needed "more research" in order to give a good answer.

ST is a great movie, surprised I missed that one myself. First Blood - tremendous movie... personally wouldn't call it a war movie, more a "war movie by association", but no matter, it deserves a mention. Good call.

Original choice, and a very good one. Western Sci-Fi... can't think of anything that even fits in the same kind of category, at least not in live action format (I think Anime may have gone there a couple of times).

Well said. Another treasure sadly underutilised these days. Education is never a bad thing. Some kudos too to Michael Palin for trying to show some unseen corners of the world to the uninitiated.

LOL. How can we win? I know, let's put Rocky in goal! The way he stood there and kept going "come on, come on... is that all you got?"... what, was Ivan Drago playing center forward for the Nazis? That Pele bloke looked useful though, maybe he'll amount to something.

Give him a few years to get all the categories under his belt, and then just name the Ben Affleck back catalog.

As a general comment - Raiders of the Lost Ark seems to be a very popular choice...

    Hi,

Okay, well, here's my opinion on the WORST of each genre! I expect bullets to be flying in my direction, very soon! :D

    Adventure: BMX Bandits

Animation : Most Walt Disney animations!

Comedy: Anything with Adam Sandler or Rob Schneider in it!

Crime: Once Upon A Time In America (It just doesn't go anywhere.. for nearly 4 hours!)

Documentary: Koyannisqatsi (Well made, but shockingly dull!)

Drama: Four Rooms (Tarantino was in this!)

Fantasy: The Crow (Very mediocre adaption of an average comic book story)

Horror: The Blair-Witch Project (Complete tripe, and about as scary as a newborn and very cute kitten!)

Family: Problem Child (and its sequels)

Martial Arts: Any of those cheapy martial art flicks that star Bruce Li, or Bruce Le, or other derivations of the famous and real Bruce Lee!

Mini-Series or Series: Big Brother 3 (onwards), I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, etc, etc, etc, ad infinitum! :suicide:

Music-based: The Word (Okay it's a TV show, but it was just junk!)

    Non-English Language: Hero

Romance: Dirty Dancing 2  and what the fudge?!

Sci-Fi: The Matrix (and sequels!) (Never has any one film ripped-off so much, from so many other superior films!)

Sports: Manchester United - Beyond The Promised Land

    Superhero: Condorman

Thriller/Suspense (non action-based): Donnie Darko (Compleete tripe, except for the Mad World song)

Thriller/Action (action-based): Anything by Steven Seagal

Western: The Dollars Trilogy (just dull, and dumb!)

War (WW2 or earlier): Saving Private Ryan (Opening 30 minutes - absolutely awesome. The rest of the film, utter :censored: !)

War (Vietnam or later): Heaven And Earth (Okay, it's not the absolutely worst war film ever made, but in comparison to "PLatoon" and "Born On The 4th Of July", it's a really weak finish to what should have been a superb war trilogy!
