This isn't necessarily for the last couple of generations - it could be at any time throughout your gaming history, but I'm generally asking regarding the amount of hours you've likely put into a game, rather than over what time period.

I don't have to look too far back for mine:

    1. Singstar (does that count?)
    2. Burnout Paradise
    3. Need For Speed Rivals.

    What about y'all?

It's difficult to know really, there are so many that I've played for months.

First is likely to be Neverwinter Nights.

Second is probably some big multiplayer game with lots of mods. Unreal Tournament 2004 or Battlefield 1942 most likely.

Third? Some big strategy game. Total Annihilation, Sim City 3000/4, Medieval: Total War, Europa Universalis III.

There are so many others I could mention, X2, Kerbal Space Program, Morrowind, Baldurs Gate II, Independence War 2 - Edge of Chaos.

It's such a shame that as of late so many game developers more interested in invading your computer with storefronts and other advertising than in creating an immersive experience.

World of Warcraft - must be hitting a good 15000/20000 hours on this now.
    Street Fighter 2
I think BF2 might come in 3rd, either that or Super Mario World

World of Warcraft - Probably tops the list. From release I must have spent close to a year online till I stopped playing.
Counter strike/Team Fortress - Don't know how many accumulated months were spent on these but I can imagine it was a lot.
Championship Manager 03 (I think it was) - I couldn't get away from this game. Not as polished as the versions now but by far the best version of the game ever released.

Close behind would be quite a few games:

Castlevania - Symphony of the Night - Played through this dozens of times. By far the best in the series which has never been matched since.
Half-Life - Put hours and hours into this both replaying it and playing all the add-ons.
Left 4 Dead 2 - Another life sucker. Simply a superb game.
Doom 1&2 - All the way from shareware to MP death matches. Just awesome and sank many an hour into this.
Sim City 3000 (world I think) - Played this for almost 10 years solid.
Demons Souls - Blew me away and this is the game Castlevania 3D should have been. Fabulous, fabulous game with a difficulty level (in places) to make you cry..
Chrono Trigger/Cross - Another couple I've played through numerous times and racked up the hours on.
Ogre Tactics - Utterly brilliant and played through it again for the umpteenth time only recently
LBA 1&2 - Another couple I ploughed endless hours into replaying them.
Freedom Fighters - Gem of a PC game released moons ago that I must have replayed countless times.

There are lots of others I could mention like FF7, Zelda, FF Tactics, Vandal Hearts, Skyrim but most of those I haven't played through anywhere near the amount of times I have with those listed above.

    Hmmm let me think.

Champ Manager 3, i have to agree with @Apsilon was the pinnacle of football manager games.
Frontier Elite 2, i remember putting a lot of hours into this, back in the day.
UFO Enemy Unknown, the original i spent many hours with this and remember the first time i had to defend one of my bases from an alien attack, the difficulty really ramped up on this game and i could never get it completed. I could still play it now too.

    Super Mario Kart (SNES)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2 (I think it was 2)
At a guess I'd say either
Zelda: A Link to the Past (replayed a number of times)
    Or
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (went a year when I played this on almost every luck break from work).

Certain that Super Mario Kart would be top of list for hours spent playing. Mate and I had an ongoing vs tally that spanned something like 5 years. That's on top of all the hours spent trying to outdo each other's time trials.

ISS PE/Pro Evo - played the series almost daily from ISSPE to PES5
Laser Squad - played this regularly for years in my youth
Vulcan - same as laser squad, dread to think how many hours we played this. Games would often last around 8 hours each and we played it regularly for years

    Games that had quantifiable logging:

Everquest - 70+ days, so 2000hrs or more
    DOTA2 - 600+ hrs
    BF3/BFBC2 - 250+ hrs each

    Unquantifable:

Daggerfall & Oblivion - Easily 400hrs each if I had to guess.
Laser Squad (C64), Chaos (Spectrum) and Mario Kart (SNES)- all the go to multiplayer games of my youth and must have played these over and over and over.
Dungeon Master (Atari ST) and Lock n Chase (ColecoVision) - single player games that I know I played over and over.

And Arcade: Mr Do! (because I was good at it) and Gauntlet.

Top 3 most played is slightly different to top 3 favourites so:

    1. Ultima Online - No game has ever had this much impact on my life, absolutely awesome and some of my best friends I met through it. This would also be my favourite game.
    2. League of Legends - The social side is awful, but a very addictive game for its one-more-go gameplay.
    3. Heroes of Might and Magic - Nominating this for the series, I've pumped so many hours into it over the years, even more than Civilization.

Fallout 3 even though almost unplayable on PS3 . And NV after.
Counter Strike/Source , Still unbeaten for MP due to the community and something COD will never get.
GTA, still clunky but still the best open world games ever made and a world of doing what the fudge you feel like.

Gameplay is always top and in the end all and these three have given to many hours of unnatural light.
