This must be the first petition I've seen which wasn't more of an "attack" on government legislation. The government won't act on it no matter how many signatures it receives, but its nice to see someone asking for clarification rather than demanding a change in the law - it comes across as being a little more realistic.

<Loan Voice?>This petition is coming at the 'problem' from totally the wrong angle. The petition is asking for clarification on the law surrounding photography in a public place. The law is clear it doesnt need any further clarification. The fact that certain people choose to restrict other people's right to take photographs through their own ignorance or for their own purpose is not something that would be altered in any way whatsoever by 'clarifying the existing law' which is already clear.

Instead a petition should be raised to introduce a law that makes it illegal to stop someone from taking photos whilst on public property unless it falls under the official secrets act. This whole boll**ks of anti-terror laws spouted by over zelous security guards would be therefore covered by this new law especially as they would, by law, either have to apply this rule to everyone regardless of what type of camera they were using (not just the SLR brigade) or accept that any self respecting terrorist isn't going to draw attention to themselves by using a huge camera with a huge lens and would invariably get the vast majority of what they need from the Internet and Google Earth.</Loan Voice?>

Sorry - don't do petitions, nice thought though. Nor do I need the law clarified.
I still think we should take to the streets!

I think you're far from a lone voice. Although have you considered consolidating? :smashin:

I rarely sign petitions either - Especially these e-petitions

As has been mentioned, it's the jobsworth's cack handedly trying to apply the law that need to be looked into, rather than laws themselves. This goes for the police as well as the hired hands.

Obviously in recent years the police have been given the powers to stop, question and search you at their will (pretty much) If you're making photographs of underground station entrances for example, then I don't think you should be too surprised if you're asked what you're up to. It happened to me when I was a teenager when I made photographs 'near' a hospital. It was no big deal, I explained what I was up to, and that was that.

Of course all this is nothing new - and compared to the years during and surrounding WWII, I'd say we live in a very open and paranoia free society.

One of the great problems with this country IMO is the constant moaning and worrying; often based on incorrect interpretations, and misleading reporting (hands up who buys the Daily Mail).

Try going to a country where your rights and civil liberties are really restricted.

    *Climbs aboard bandwagon.

Incidentally, I agree that the law is fairly clear on this and that what is not so clear is how (and why) it is implemented. Whether or not the increase of infringements on the rights of photographers is part of an orchestrated policy, or simple misfortune for the photographers (or paranoia on the part of the various "officials" involved) we may never know. However, I think that a "clarification" of the law is a useful first step in making sure that the people whose job is to act on the law are properly aware of it.
