Personally I think it ends with the use of the "Halo" and was wondering what you guys interpretation of the ending was.

When Anderton gets put in containment, the guy in the wheelchair comments that it's really quite peaceful, and that all your dreams come true.

This made me think that from the moment his wife gets him out of containment, to the happy ending is only Anderton's dream.

I've heard this mentioned a few times. To be honest, I'm not sure Spielberg could be that subtle. Another director maybe, but not him.

What I've never "got" is how they framed the Tom Cruise character ? Simply sticking a guy in hotel room with a load of fake photos isn't going to trigger a premonition....

...or did I miss somethign real obvious ? :suicide:

Never thought of it like that, interesting...will have a look now and see what I think...but I'm leaning towards not thinking this is so, like Whiting said, it's not very Spielberg...

I guess what I was trying to say is that if Spielberg wanted to allude to it, it's in his nature to show how clever he's being that I'm sure their would be more clues and hints to this alternative take on the ending you wouldn't fail to come up with the question. As the film stands at the minute, it's so slightly subtle that it bypasses most people who've seen the film.

I'm sure Spielberg would have gone for a "Total Recall" approach which litters the film with plenty of clues as to the possible duality of the story.

Anyway, that's just my opinion of Spielberg's directing.

I do like the idea though so kudos to Phillip K Dick. Actually, is it alluded to in the short story because the similar "is it/isn't it ?" question from Bladerunner also has plenty of clues as well.

Oh, anyone want to tell me what I've missed with regards my 2nd question above ?

Haven't seen it in a while Whiting but I remember mulling the same point over and I came up with...

1 Someone (possibly the corrupt old police chief) was going to tip off Anderton that they knew who the killer of his son was and where he would be.
2 Anderton would be enraged and go to the building.
3 Anderton would see the pictures and kill the imposter.
4 The pre-cogs saw this prior to the tip off and hence the tip off never occurred. Remember they see all murders!
5 Now Anderton has the clues in the form of the dream sequence and gets there without being tipped off.

Enjoyed the film though. Worringly I like a lot of Tom Cruise films!

Spielberg loves his happy sugary endings and i think everyones reading too much into this, my feeling is Spielberg should have gone for a less sentimental ending as the film suffers greatly for it, great flick up until the last 30 minutes when it starts to fall apart.

A good explanation, Mr. Preston. I like it.

But convoluted and not implied by the film (although I can understand why, for a few reasons)

Yea, I'm not convinced myself but it's the best I can come up with. Whether this is what the film makers had in mind is anyone's guess. I often wonder if some film makers are bothered about the detail at all.
