Inspired by memories brought up in another thread regarding what music you listened to. What did you listen it on? Naturally cameras weren't as common in those days, so inclusion of internet photos is cool :) I had to do that...

I started with a Schneider all in one setup as a present from my parents.

But then after I sold my first commercial software application I upgraded my bedroom to play some Chicago House and Trance rather loud :) With a pair of Technics SL1200 an old mixer deck, a Rotel Amp (donated from my dad), and some stonking boomy Jamo D365 speakers...Good thing we didn't have neighbours :p

So what did you have? Show me some retro gear...

I was in the Royal Marines based on a Royal Naval friggate so space was a premium so I got one of these.

Cool I remember those. I guess it would be interesting out on sea 😬🤣

On of the few things I ever saw on that TV program Tomorrows World that actually made it into the real world, think I bought it in Gibralter where it would have been much cheaper than buying in the UK.

Let me guess

Our first record player was a so called portable in a nasty vinyl case...we then up graded to a 'teak' radiogram...looked like a coffin and was nearly as big as one...

We had a radiogram at home, as you say a big beast.

Bedroom audio? That would be my old Columbia valve radio, a hand-me-down from my parents until I could afford my own gear. We had a radiogram in the front room before that. https://thumbs.worthpoint.com/LMWuq...2/25/360_e7e4bf720522894539cff93d8a6718d0.jpg

First hifi system was a Metrosound ST20 amp https://www.picclickimg.com/d/l400/...lifier-ST20-Model-Stereo-MetroSound-Retro.jpg with some bulky speakers I can't remember the name of, and a Pioneer PL12D record deck - which I still have, and use! https://specialistdivision.files.wordpress.com/2017/08/pioneer-pl-12d.jpg?w=512

Oh, the memories! :)

I think my parents had one of those, combined with a drinks cabinet 🤣 Also had cigarettes, pipe tobacco and cigars in there. For guests, my parents never smoked themselves 🤣

My first record player (around 1979/80ish) was my Dads old Dynatron unit, housed in a wooden box with a lid. My Dad came quite close to smashing it over my head once, he had reached breaking point after I played a Duran Duran album on repeat once too often.....

Or "roughly how old are you?"
I had this on 'loan'(!) from my mum, for playing tapes; it was for a while the best Compact Cassette recorder in the household:

I couldn't find image of the exact model that I received as Christmas present 1978 or 1979, but this is representative:

And just like the one my dad had several years earlier:

Well he had access to Pye/Philips staff sales.
I later inherited this:

A Philips Tandem 'boom box' when I was about 14. I still have some of the bootleg cassettes I copied on it.

Then when I moved to England and got my first pay cheque, I bought an Aiwa hifi separates system from Rumblelows in Hayes. Can't remember the model but there wasn't a CD player (approx. 1991) so pic attached is not accurate but you get the idea.

My first CD player, bought 2nd hand but almost new from a work colleague who thought they'd never catch on.

JVC hifi with built in turntable and tape deck.
Binatone boom box thingy for taping the charts and dubbing.
Matsui system.
Then 1210, realistic mixer, then added cdjs and various mixers by Pioneer, Vestax, Allen and Heath, Ecler Mac.
Intimidation Don with the kill switches.
😂 Switches used to click clack.

Speakers I had everything from Jamo to powered speakers from JBL, Martin Audio etc.
Then moved onto a Vestax controller, then Pioneer.
Then retired.

Now just have a Marantz stereo amp and a pair of Quads.
Sold all my records to two lads from Northampton. Previously I'd sold a substantial amount to a local collector.
First record I bought personally was Herbie Hancock Rockit.
Wish I'd have kept them now. 🧐🥺

Oh gosh yes I forgot I had the double tape decks as well. Was perfect for making tapes for girlfriends :) And great quality recording when hobbyscoop was broadcasting computer programs from the Carolina pirate radio ship. I totally forgot I had a Technics separates setup with AA amplifier.
