    I have quite a few.
I usually get them when I like a few songs a group have done but I'm not too sure which album to go for, so the safest bet is to go for a 'best of...' album:

    ABBA gold
    ABC
    America
    B52s
    Beach Boys
    Bee Gees
    The Beatles
    Big Country and the skids
    Blondie
    Bread
    Kate Bush
    Lloyd Cole and the commotions
    Elvis Costello and the attractions
    Devo
    Erasure
    Herman's hermits
Nick Heyward and haircut one hundred
    Joe Jackson
    The Jam
    The kinks
    Madness
    Madonna
    Marillion
    Sinead O' Connor
    The Orb
    The Pixies
    The Police
    Prefab sprout
    Pretenders
The best punk album in the world
    Queen
    Lionel Richie
    Sade
    Rolling stones
    Simon and Garfunkel
    Rod Stewart (his early recordings)
    The Undertones
    Suzanne Vega
    The Who
    Wings
    Stevie Wonder
    Yazoo
    ZZ Top

    :)

As a rule, I don't really like "best of " albums, prefer to get the artist's collection of albums.

But The Police and Texas are good 'uns :)

I generally don't buy compilations due to the, probably unfounded, belief that only the 'old' or people who have no real musical direction buy them. Trouble is with Best Of's is that you miss some of the real classic tracks that the proper album work generally contains.

However, I will admit to having three:

The Bee Gees, Rolling Stones and Supertramp.

All the remaining CD's are single artist.

not really a best of purchaser either, but one best of i do have,is crowded house. every song is brilliant.
a shame they are no more. the songwriting, and harmonies were something that only come around every so often.
neill finn has released some solo albums since, but unfortunately they aren`t a patch on the c.h. stuff.

I no longer buy artist compilations for the reasons listed above.

I used to have Free Bird - The Best of Lynyrd Skynyrd, which was brilliant.

I usually buy compilations for two reasons ; to pick up rare tracks (b-sides, a live set/live tracks) for artists I'm already familiar with (e.g. Clash, Pixies) or for bands who I've never fancied picking up an album proper but always enjoyed their singles (e.g. Ash, Gene, Morrissey).

They're also quite handy for the car.

Some of my favourite compilations :
    • The Complete Stone Roses -- Stone Roses
      Clash On Broadway -- Clash
      Decade -- Neil Young
      21 Singles -- Jesus & Mary Chain
      1974/1979 -- David Bowie
Hatful of Hollow -- The Smiths
The Very Best Of -- Talk Talk
Singles Collection - The London Years -- The Rolling Stones
Way To Blue -- Nick Drake
      Retro -- New Order
Crystal Days -- Echo & The Bunnymen
Nuggets (Original Artifacts from The 1st Psychedelic Era 1965-1968) -- Various U.S. garage bands.

Quite correct, sir. So good, I own it twice (vinyl and CD).

Actually, Hatful of Hollow is what a 'Best of' compilation is all about. Your standard selection of classics for the casual fan, alternatively recorded for the die-hard collector. Everyone's a winner.

Despite the odd ropey one, you can't fault the quality of the singles. Disposable, indie power-pop with catchy choruses...can't be bad, can it ? It won't change your life, but who cares ?

So should I buy The Best Of Ash or just buy 1977 . Why would they bring out a best of if all their best tracks were on the first album. I don't understand.

You can probably pick up 77 and FAA for around the same price as the Best of..........just search around your local stores under the discount shelves....Best of , means somebodies best of ......buy the complete albums, they always have more of a mood.
