Hello guys,

I am a geek for greco-roman antiquity, i also study Latin. Now i want to see a bit of reception of the topics in 20th and 21st century TV and cinema (preferably on Blu-Ray :)

Films i have
  • Troy
  • Immortals
  • Rome (TV show)
  • Jason and the Argonauts
  • Ulysses (with Kirk Douglas)
  • Percy Jackson series

Can't say that's really my thing, even though I do like history and historical films, just I more like other periods. I do like Gladiator though. There was a TV film/ drama I watched several years ago, "Boudica" starring Alex Kingston, which I quite enjoyed. Don't know if it's been released on Blue Ray or DVD though.

Well there's the likes of Spartacus (movie and TV show) and Ben-Hur, but also check out Agora. Very interesting.

Fall of the Roman Empire

Alexander (in its many different cuts though I think the Theatrical is the best overall)

Agora as QuestShield mentions is very interesting and pretty unique in fact.

Gladiator is already on my watch list :)
I actually watched Agora it was very interesting to see about this famous female philosopher in Antiquity.
Alexander is also on watch list :)

@Don Rogers Tash: Do you mean the Cleopatra movie of 1973?

The old BBC series I, Claudius might be your cup of tea.
OK, that's the highbrow stuff done...

I'd hunt down Caligula aswell, starring Malcolm McDowall. There's been several different versions of it over the years... the one with the porn inserts is the one I like best  but it's not exactly the best version of the film.

Also Caligula The Untold Story directed by Aristide Massaccesi (sleaze king Joe D'Amato) under one of his various pseudonyms

And all the Italian Hercules... movies. They're ace. I like ...In The Haunted World best, mainly because Mario Bava could point his camera at a turd and still make it look good with some coloured filters... and with this film, he pretty much did.

so maybe just stick with I, Claudius ;)

I really enjoyed the Rome and Spartacus TV shows. They gave a good depiction of the everyday life of Romans.

Gladiator copied a lot of Fall of the Roman Empire
Both started based on true events but there it ends as Commodus lived 16 years and strangled in his bath.
There was a big argument with Bradley Walsh and Shauna Wallace how Gladiator ended and think Shaun was quoting fact and Bradly the film'

The Robe and the follow up Detritus and the Gladiators involves Romans but are biblical films. Jay Robinson brilliant as the nutty as a fruit cake Caligula. Who was in Star Trek episode Elaan Troyius as a wimpy ambassador and though should have been cast in the very next episode Who The Gods Destroy who was better suited to the insane Garth.

Ouo Vardis is also a Roman film about Nero and has biblical vibes and surprisingly in 1.37 : 1 aspect ratio.
