i was mucking about on mad max last night.

my PC nails 1080p on full detail but at 4k its choppy.... i would not say unplayable but compared to a nice steady 60fps it is not great.

i assumed because 1080p divides fairly nicely from 4k this would be the best resolution for my tv to not look odd, however on the off chance i gave 2560 x 1440 a go (QHD)

I am so glad i did.... Visually you can barely tell it apart from 4k unless you swap between the 2, much better on my screen than 1080p and the performance on my gtx 980 is practically indistinguishable from 1080p - i have vsync on still as well so no tearing or anything. I will be trying this with all my games now.

I have had this card now since November 2014, it was meant to be a short term interim upgrade for VR untill the gtx1080 came out, but to be honest it just keeps on delivering the goods. it has been a superb purchase for me.

I will upgrade at some point in the turing generation, of that i am certain, however I will have fond memories of the maxwell generation.....

and as an aside, I have now officially joined the QHD fanclub........ it bodes well for if even the next series of gpus cant quite manage 4k/60 on full bubble.

If your 980 is keeping you happy , then i would just leave it be for the moment ,
i bought a 1080ti ( slapped on the NZXT kraken G12 and corsair H55 AIO) to go in my HTPC , ( guess i can't it HTPC now ) as it's been my go to gaming machine for a while now , and even tho it's the 1080ti , it still can't quiet handle 4k at max settings , so just like your self i have been dropping down to 1440p -at max settings - all bells and whistle turned on ( on some games ) - and looks just as good ( if not better) than 4k at medium settings

i have been keeping an eye on the new GPU's ( turing ) to go along side the 4KTV , but TBH whats the point when im enjoying what i can see and feel when playing what i am now.

4k is really nice but with current tech and I suspect even with the new stuff right around the corner its still gonna be somewhat not great.
I've been gaming at 1440p for a few years now and imo is great, I can't game at 1080p anymore, its just too small.
One of the funny things these days is when I read a review for some high end cpu or gpu and people asking for 1080p benchmarks makes me sad.
There is simply no reason why anyone would care for 1080p when forking money out for 1080ti or high end cpus.
1080p is for budget gamers but even then now a days going for 1440p is fairly doable.

Good to know more people joining 1440p, enjoy the awesome buttery smooth gaming!

980 is a very good card 1180 is unnecessary at present as game graphics haven't moved forward since witcher 3
I may get the 1180ti simply because I'll get a very good price for my 1080ti Custom card That price will rapidly fall Apparently the pricing for the new cards looks very good
But the power is basically over the top for current gaming needs
My 1080ti isn't oc and never has to get into top gear even for the most demanding of games . A new gen of cards isnt needed Anyway the top line cards don't exactly sell in droves.
Your 980 is an excellent card . Stick with what makes you happy

So I have not posted enough on overclocker forums to have access to the classifieds there.... BUT apparently 1080tis are going for £299 ready for the next gen!!

If I had access to that I would bag one of them for sure

Ignore this dude. This is the guy that insisted before he can run 4K60 max settings on a 970. His opinion is irrelevant when his perspective is that seriously warped.

say what? who are you talking about here?

I have never owned a 970 and sure as heck never said a 970 was any good for 4K/60 max detail. :/

I think running 4k in general is just difficult. I went from a 970 and 1080p to an ultrawide 4k monitor and 980Ti.

Initially I was bit underwhelmed with the 980Ti as games weren't maxing out on the new monitor, but I quickly came to realise that running 4k is just really hard, and I have dropped down a resolution a few times now to help with FPS, and it is defo worth doing as it still looks great at 1440p.
