So I went along to YATES's yesterday evening before going to watch BATMAN.
Took a couple of those vouchers that were in the sun.

Walk into the bar in nottingham at 6pm grab a drink and get a table its not very busy then go to order our free food.
Bar man says there is over an hours wait for food. I look round the room and said your not very busy? To which he replies its that voucher thing at the moment so we've hardly got any food left. I said but its only been running an hour and theres not many people hear so where has all the food gone. He apologizes and says that hes been told to say there is over an hours wait for food to anyone who asks!
I am starting to get really annoyed at this point but before I say anything he leans across the bar and says Wetherspoons over the road are running the offer properly. So I thank him and I leave reminding myself never to Visit YATES's ever again.

Walk into Wetherspoons they have a sign up saying they will accept the suns offer tonight only! Go to the Bar order a mix grill each with our vouchers told very sorry that there is half an hours wait as they were quite busy which they were.
So waited 30 mins had a drink and had our meal and made it in time for the film which was excellent.

By the way the Grill at Wetherspoons is bigger and better value and they are not affiliated with YATES's they just wanted to compete for custom. :smashin:

YATES's on the other hand just wanted to get us in and get a drink otherwise they could have put a sign up!

I've found that Wetherspoons tends to attract the sort of gentleman that normally drinks meths, lives in a small, cardboard house and urinates in his own trousers.

But I suppose they are preferable company to the chavs in Yates bars.

It very much depends on the pub in question. The 'Spoons in Bath is a horrible place to spend time whilst the 'Spoons in Weston-Super-Mare is quite a nice environment. Both can be full of chavs and smelly old people but what's wrong with them having a drink if they don't bother me?

The best thing about 'Spoons is that they generally have an excellent selection of beers available along with a more varied collection of spirits than most pubs have. Plus the food is consistently better than average and cheap.

Coming from someone who ate in both of the aforementioned 'Spoons yesterday and am going out for another pub lunch in Bath soon... :)

I prefer the Hogshead pubs, better selection of beers both bottled (Belgian mainly) and draught.

Does that Yates still have an old codger playing the piano upstairs?
Is Wetherspoons literally over the road? Is The Bell still there?
(it's been 20 years or so...)

'Spoons are good for a cheap drink but that's about it. The lack of music makes the atmosphere dead.

this will make me sound about 90 but the lack of music means you can have a conversation with those around you and not just the person who is 4 inches away. :)

 Not at all stealther. I hate pubs with loud music. Pubs are for enjoying a pint and a chat with your mates. Hard to do that with "hard trance" banging way at 150db!

As a parent Wetherspoons are great. You can take the kids there, get a fairly cheap and reasonable quality meal, and have a good pint! Don't go there for a night out though as they are a bit 'anypub'.

I tend to go several times a week chiefly cause the beer is cheap and the mrs works some evenings in the supermarket nearby so I get browny points for meeting her from work.
Now if there was no pub near by she would have no chance :D

Some spoons have a better atmosphere than others.

Spoons are cheap so ok - Slug & Lettice has a much better atmosphere but normally go to my 'local' as it is on the way home (3 mins from work, 1 min from home) and has 4 pool tables

Havent been in Yates for years but in Dundee they seemed to have an identity crisis - daytime and evenings excl Wed, Fri & Sat it was a quietish wine bar but on the other evenings it turned itself almost into a night club with a late licence, DJ, dancefloor etc
