I was going to buy the Yamaha RXV-630 and then was swayed towards the Sony STR-DB 1080. All set to buy and then Yamaha announce new models and I hear about the Sony STR-DB2000.

I’m confused as to what the new Sony is all about, being a digital amp? So any advice as to what’s going to be so great about the Sony or should I go with the new Yamaha 640? Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated as I am going to ‘jump’ this time and buy rather than chase the ‘next new thing’.

I'm also looking at the Infinity Oreus speakers, any experience of these with /without the Sony or Yamaha's?

    Many thanks

    Macca

Macca, Yamaha 640 is definitely the new benchmark, go for it!. See the Yamaha 640 thread on the same page.

Thanks Wasabi, I followed your links for QED as well - it beats HiFibitz and AVLand by another £50 (if they've any stock). Only problem about the thread (if you mean the review) is that my German is next to non-existant!

There's a(rough) translation of the German review on that thread now.

Someone'll slate me for this but on an aesthetics point I think the DB2000 is one ugly piece of equipment. (Also the Yamaha's titanium colur aint the best either).

I think the main difference with the 2000 over the 1080 is extra power. There's a thread somewhere on it - or see avland.

Macca, I forgot to say that apart from our personal opinions that are mostly much better than any magazine, I do actually regard areadvd very high as their tests of amps are in immense detail, which the size of the tests shows (often several pages long). That is why I have no doubt believing that the Yammy is the new benchmark.

i think the sony is a hell of a lot better than the yammy to be honest but i guess its everyone to there own.does anyone actually have a 640 yet as the power ratings do seem a little low compared to the sony (im aware sony do like to bump theres up though ;))

a mate is looking at going the av route after being stereo for sometime and i was recommended the 2000 but i like a rounded opinion so come on 640 owners what do you reckon ??
