Yamaha RX-V677 Owner's Thread

I went with an HDMI 2.0b audio extractor. That turned out to be the best option for me.

Works great.

Siuch an extractor would limit you to audio formats that can be conveyed via S/PDIF optical. S/PDIF optical cannot cnvey HD formats such as DTS-HD Master Audio or Dolby TrueHD. It also wouldn't be able to handle Dolby Digital Plus or more than just 2 channels of PCM audio.

If wanting to split the HDMI output and still have access to HD formats that you'd need something a bit more specialised. THe HDFury AVR Key for example has the ability to split the HDMI signal into 2. allowing you to send the HDR UHD video directly to a comliant display while sending the audio to an older AV receiver via HDMI. THis arrangement will allow you to convey HDR 4K UHD video to a TV while simultaneously sending HD formatted audio to an AV receiver via the second HDMI output:

Nope. Not true. This is a legit HDMI splitter. I ended up upgrading my AVR to something that supports Atmos, and I am getting that DTHD Atmos passed through via HDMI properly. Their customer support is outstanding (at least for me).

Scott, does the one you linked split out DTS-MA?

i can't decide whether to buy that one from USA (I'm in Scotland) , which is cheaper, or pay a bit more for the AVRkey, but from the EU.

I believe so, but I can't say I have tried it. I suggest you send an email to their support dept. Like I said, they were outstanding which was one reason I went with it. I had TONS of questions about what it actually was doing.

How did this work out for you, Scott?
I'm moving house and I'll need to get an alternative solution for my living room. Was thinking of getting a Shield but it only has 1 hdmi out. Obviously I still want DTS-MA and HDR.

The power supply appears to be conducive with EU and UK standards. The unit appears to use a transformer to step the voltage down to 5 volts DC. it is a matter of how to plug the transformer into a UK plug socket.

  • Power Supply:
    • Input: AC100 - 240V 50/60Hz
    • Output: DC 5V/1A (US/EU standards, CE/FCC/UL certified)

The unit was available in the UK via Amazon, but isn't currently available:

You can also buy via eBay, but you'd still be vuying from the US:

Yeah I appear to have missed an opportunity on buying from the UK.
Still cheaper to buy from the US, than to buy an HDFury.

Still cheaper/easier than upgrading my amp, though

The device is now once again available to purchase in the UK via Amazon's UK outlet:

New stock will be arriving 25th February.

Nice one!
I bought it directly from Orei yesterday. Works out roughly the same price.

The Orei unit arrived today and it works perfectly.
Sends 4k HDR to my TV and DTS-MA etc to my amp.
Working great on my new Shield setup and I can finally retire my ancient method of hooking up my PC to the TV. (HDMI to TV, TV to amp through ARC and display port>passive hdmi convertor>amp for audio)

Hi, very basic question with hopefully a simple answer.
I’ve had USB turntable for a number of years that I have previously fed through a small mini hifi unit to listen to and digitise some of my vinyl LPs. The turntable is powered directly by a 3 pin plug into the wall.

In the manual there’s reference to a separate phono input on the RX-V777 only but it doesn’t look as though the RX-V677 has the same inputs.

Is it possible to connect the turntable to the RX-V677 using its integrated red/white RCA audio leads and plug them direct into the either the Audio 1 or 2 input on the receiver?

Does the USB turntable have a built-in pre amp?
You'll need one of those between the turntable and the amp, if it doesn't.

I think it has. Here’s a list of features. It mentions a pre amp.

FEATURES
  • Turn your records into MP3s* and listen anywhere
  • 1/8” stereo line input to digitize music from cassettes or other sources
  • Connects to your home stereo system for use as a traditional record player
  • 33 1/3 and 45 RPM speeds
  • Line output with integrated preamp for home listening
  • This product is class compliant; it does not require drivers
It’s a very basic turntable - ION TTUSB05XL - if that helps.

I guess I’m just looking for reassurance that plugging it in directly to the Audio inputs on the receiver won’t damage the receiver. Or does having a pre amp prevent that from happening? And of course will there be sound?!!

Hi, new user here. I have an odd problem I am hoping someone can help with. I have the Yamaha V-677, it's been working great for years.

A few months ago I noticed that when it is first turned on there is a stuttering in the audio playback. This happens if I am streaming any service from my TV or even when I am using Spotify on my phone with the receiver as the device. Every 20-30 seconds there is a slight stutter, like it's re-syncing the sample rate or something.

At first I thought it might be a network issue so I replaced the router/cable it was connected to, no difference.

But the REALLY odd part:

After turning it on, if I go to the unit itself and open the sound programs and simply confirm the selection (I don't need to change it, just open the menu and close it again) the problem goes away on all sources. Until I turn it off again, then I have to go through those same steps.

In addition to that oddity, if I do the same exact thing using the Yamaha app on my phone, it does NOT fix the problem, I have to go into the menu on the unit itself.

Any ideas what is going on here?

Thanks
Steve

Possibly... I have also noticed this... but in my mind it coincided with me getting a new IP-based set top box from Comcast/xfinity. For whatever reason, when I turn off the TV using the xfinity remote (which was configured to support power control for both the Samsung TV and the yamaha receiver), it doesn't actually shut off the set top box itself. But, since everything else is shutting off, I didn't notice this at first.... I noticed when I came back, and I was getting the stutter issue exactly as you described. In my head, it was because the STB had gotten a buffer that was a bit too large, from streaming continuously throughout the night or whatever.... The only way I can reboot that is to manually unplug it and re-plug it in. That serves to resolve the issue. I might be completely wrong about the cause, but it resolves the issue. BTW, if I switch over to Spotify or whatever, I don't have the stutter problem... I only get it on the TV if I haven't rebooted the STB.... from what I can tell.

Nothing changed on my end right before this started happening that I can recall, except we signed up for Disney + and that was the first time I noticed it. I assumed it was an issue with their app but then I noticed it on all the others as well (including Spotify which does not involve turning the TV on at all).

Still very odd though that I can consistently fix it with a basic re-affirming of the DSP settings.

Has Spotify connect stopped working for anyone in the past few weeks (Around mid-Oct 2020) ? Has been working fine, rebooted network av receiver everything and doesn't appear in the Spotify app as a device.
Thanks

not having that problem.

evening all,

is there an on line instruction manual still available?

can't find it on the yamaha website anymore.

I want to know if I can plug my phone into the Amp and let Spotify play through it.

and more specifically, the manual:

Hello Yamaha people.

One of my amps, specifically the rx-v677 has started an annoying habit of crackling audio during silent spots in video playback and has also decided to make my Samsung tv moan about not being plugged into the arc hdmi. I don’t use arc but I do like the tv to turn off the amp when it goes into standby, this doesn’t happen whilst this error is manifesting itself.

Reseat the hdmi cable and the arc error goes away, then comes back a short while afterwards.

Switching to pure audio gets rid of the crackling sound.

Tried a handful of new hdmi cables and as the audio fault appears to happen from multiple sources, I am out of ideas.

Popped the lid and have blown some air through it, as it was full of dust. Also pushed the connectors down on the hdmi out port as it seemed really loose on the hdmi plugs I’d tried.

Hi, just transitioned to an RX-V677 from an ancient Pioneer VSX817. With the Pioneer everything was direct to the TV's HDMIs with an optical return to the amp for sound, worked great. I was then given a "faulty" rx-v677 which was in protection mode after having liquid spilled on it. Took it out of protection mode and it's running sweet :) My question is around the video signals, they just don't look as crisp as they did with the old direct device to TV set-up, and there's some colouration I'm not liking so much. Is there scope to alter the video signal processing to clean-up the video feed from the amp to the TV? TV's a Panasonic HX950

Help:
I know I've had it a while .. but....

When the amp starts up and volume is at 50, I usually turn it up to about 42 and it's fine.
Now days I can be at 29 and still think it needs turning up.

It's not my ears!! LoL

Does the sound volume deteriorate over time?

Is it on its way out?

Tia

I've also had mine a while and have observed something similar, but it can vary with source and even some broadcasts. Its most noticeable with the freesat signal, audio feed from which goes from TV to amp via optical. I had put it down to the signal rather than the amp, however I am also occasionally conscious of it with other sources e.g. Disney plus on Xbox via HDMI. I realise this might not actually help much and its probably something you've already considered. I'll be interested to see other folks responses.

Cheers,

Dominic
