Hello everyone and a happy new year to all

I'm considering either Yamaha RX-A810 or Pioneer VSX-2021 as replacement for an ageing Denon 5.1 amp.

I can't make my mind between them based on their bells and whistles and sadly I can't audition any of the two.

Which one would you recommend for best audio quality and performance?
I'm 50%-50% between music and movies.

My speakers are currently 5.0, all by Monitor Audio
    Front: MA Silver RS6 (91 dB, 6 Ohms, 38 Hz - 30 KHz)
Back: MA Bronze BR2 (90 dB, 6 Ohms)
Center: MA Bronze BR-LCR (90 dB, 6 Ohms)

Thanks in advance for your input

Hey.. I had this choice and went for the 2021. I listened to both with my Boston acoustics speakers.. The Pioneer sounded clear and controlled to me, the Yamaha muddy.. But of course, that's with my speakers...

    I demo'd these two with MA RX6 AV and B&W 683 AV .

The Yamaha was better for music, but lacked a little bit of dynamics and feeling for AV. The pioneer filled in evey gap the yamaha left for AV and although was not as good as the Yamaha for music; there wasn;t much in it.

It was the combination of the great app*, very good control options + streaming and 3 zones that tipped it for me, but I was convinced enough by the AV performance. They're very similar in spec though.

*I am having issues with the app but I'm determined to get to the bottom of it

There was a clear difference in sound though (even my lass agreed to that!) which one you gard is better will be up to you, so I would suggest getting a demo. (I demo'd other yamaha and pioneer amps btw- there seemd to be a 'pioneer sound' and a 'yamaha sound' )

Many thanks for your detailed answer.

Since you auditioned with MA speakers and concluded the above, I'm leaning towards the Yamaha now...

Remember that in surround sound, both the Yamaha RX-A810 and Pioneer VSX-1021 would need to be properly setup with the surround speaker package attached, ie individual level setting for each speaker , plus distance from listening position set for each speaker, including subwoofer. Did the retailer at the demo go to this trouble? If not, any 'differences' heard may be just set up issues.
