yamaha dvsl100 problems

Guys,
Before I contact the retailer just wanted to ask on here if anyone knows of any problems with any of the Yamaha dvd players wrt ticking noises & loud whirring of the dvd drive mechanism. My Yamaha DVSL100 that I have had about 6 months is starting to do this with some regularity. Does seem to be intermittent but is now driving me nuts.
Oh also has anyone had any problems playing certain dvd's on there Yamaha players. I understand that they are based on Phillips transport etc, would this mean if I got a Phillips player I would get the same sorts of problems?

hello lee, have just joined forum having seen your post. i too had one of these players, bought oct 04. main reason for buying was to watch things recorded on my sons dvd recorder, on finalized dvd-rs. had playback problems from day one, sticking and freezing, player returned to authorised dealer for repair. every part of player was replaced, apart from housing and power cable. when returned was no different, same problems. was noisy from day one. yamaha technical dept very helpfull, since had full refund from vendor..

Anyone else, is there a bad batch?
No problem with finalised dvd-rs as such with mine.
Only notice ticking noise & whirring on some dvd/cds from drive on occasions.
Have now spoken to both the retailer & Yamaha.
Either I send the item back for investigation /repair....this could be with them for 4-6 weeks or I live with it!
The Yamaha dealer said that a "flash" to the firmware may fix these.......is this true? He also said they hadn't had any problems at all with this player before..
The thing is I love it to bits when it works
Might give it another week and see if it improves!

Okay nobody else has any comments?
Arranged with the retailer for them to pick it up & send back to Yamaha for them to have a look. The retailer seem really good.
Borrowed a dvd player from a mate until I get it back!
One other thing I noticed yesterday which is really weird is that on a few dvd's the multiangle icon appears on screen (only for the first chapter) tried pressing the angle button but this does nothing, you cannot remove it at all Anyone else have this problem?
