Yamaha DVDS540 or Pioneer DV565a?

I will be trading in my trusty NAD T550 at Richer (coming up for it's three year mark) and am looking at one of the above players.

Will it be worth the extra money for the Pioneer?

I am currently using a massive(!) 21" Sony TV and the Scan AV6 surround sound speakers. I also have a Cambridge Audio A5 amp coupled with Celestion FS2 floorstanders for muzak. My viewing position must be fully 24" from the tv.

I will be looking to move house within the next year, upon which I will be getting either a rear projection or possibly a cheapish projector.

At present I am using the NAD as a cd source too, although I think I might purchase the Marantz CD5400 either now (if I get the Yamaha) or in a couple of pay day's time.

Your thoughts are much appreciated!

Hi Aenimal,
I have the Yamaha s540 also from Richer Sounds and Im more than pleased with it when viewing the player on my Toshiba 36zp38 tv. Ive connected it up with Belden 7710a component cables and a Belden 1694a digital co-ax for the sound using the TV to output the DD sound. Although this is my first DVD player I can not compare the Yamaha to any other player. As you know RS have a very good returns policy so Id be tempted to try both players out before you decide.
Hope this helps.

Bloody hell that was quick! Cheers for your response - I think a trip to RS will be in order.

I always like to be armed with whatever fact and opinion I can before I walk through the door. It makes the whole shopping trip more user friendly :)

I heard that Yamaha S540 has a "not so good" de-interlacer.

Is it correct? Does it perform good when playing film-based NTSC material in progressive mode?

Thanks for your comments

Cannot comment on the de-interlacer as I only have region 2 DVDs at the moment but it looks great via PS with LOTR and 007.
I know there are a number of threads on the Yamaha S540 so it could be worth sending a PM to someone who has got NTSC discs.

Helen,

Many thanks for your kind reply.

One more question:

Are you satisfied with its performance as a audio-CD player?

Also consider a Toshiba 330 (only £67 on the front page of Richer's website). This wil be fine your current set up and won't discrace itself with a an RPTV or projector. By the time you splash out on a display you'll probably want a newer DVD player anyway with the latest technology.

If you havent gone and got anything yet it might interest you to search out the limit 900SE as its on offer on these forums witha 20% discout. It is tuned by Cyrus so it is very musical and has pal and ntsc prog. scan and dvd audio playback. Kills 2 birds with one stone :D

I just got one in preferance to the pioneer 565a
