I had one, no problems and very good picture quality for the price.

I too had one before I bought a Philips Q50 (despite being an older model). I ran the Yamaha as my main DVD source to my AE100 projector, and was very happy with the results. My only reason for upgrading to the Philips was it was a brand new one in a box at a horribly cheap price. You may want to look at the Yamaha DVD-S550 - the replacement model for the 540 but is slimmer and adds Divx playback. Another interesting addition to the 550 is CD-Upsampling, so makes a slightly better CD player than the older model.
