If you had the choice of these two at £300 which would you recommend?

Main use will be DVD movies, television and some use for CD's/radio.

    Cheers!

I went for the Marantz and can't really find any negatives at the price. I considered the yamaha but check out the power into 5 channels.

speakers are most likely going to be mordaunt premeir. Although possibly Tannoy FX5.1. It will be tough to get a demo with these set ups, so any advice would be appreciated.

Any others to consider in this price bracket/feature levels?

The Yamaha seems to win a lot of awards and I have now found it at £249.

Thjere was a review in HCC a couple of months ago. 5 receivers were tested. The Marantz came top. The Yamaha came bottom. Go figure...

Mmm, back to looking at the Marantz then!

Can anyone tell me the difference between the standard 5400 and the 5400OSE models?

Also, are these the best two in this class?

Pioneer VSX-D812 also appears to have good reviews at a similar price.

I'd still recommend the Marantz over the Pioneer.

What suffers most in budget AV Receivers is the power amplification. This is the sector where marantz' budget receivers are unusually good at performing in.

The Pioneer offers a few more features from what I can see. I think I can disregard the Yamaha as it doesnt have FM radio facilities from what I can gather.

Yes, the problem with Marantz receivers, the features count :p.

I haven't seen the lab test results for the Pioneer receiver, but would guess they aren't as positive as those of the Marantz.

The Marantz is IMO the best all rounder. Very good with both movies and music, at the price of course.

Why discount the Yamaha just because an FM reciever - Bear in mind that FM will be switched off in the non too distant furture - Also if an FM Tuner is important try the RXV640RDS - Yamaha's equivalent to the Marantz !

The DSP640 is £249 pounds i doubt you can find the Marantz for that ! The best i can see is £350.

So you "could" spend the difference on a Digital Tuner :)

I doubt many people will rate the Marantz £100 better than a Yamaha !

    This is my opinion.

    1. Marantz 5400 is on sale at RS for £320 which is an excellent price and that is only £30 more than RX-V640, in terms of power, I think Marantz has an upperhand as you can find a link in my best prices summary thread here http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=80217]summary[/url] to soundandvisionmag and it produces over 90w driven over 6channels during the lab tests.

    2. But 640 has got loads of superb reviews and it shows extremely good value, and soundwise I'm sure that it is equally good, again, use the links I provide in that thread, some are in german and some are in english. But with the price still at £330, it is not as competitive as before, as others are getting cheaper.

    3. I assume you are not interested in Onkyo 601 or Denon 1804, which both has equally impressive sound and really useful feature in the already packed with feature list,a good range of adjustable bass filters crossovers, which no other brands have in this level.

But if it is between Yamaha and Marantz, I recommend you quickly go for YAMAHA 740 for only £308!!! at empire empire. According to areadvd, it is more than just a few more watts compared to 640, it is together with Denon 1804 the best amps in this price brackets and that is based on a £400+ price for 740. Links to 740 review and other non-uk reviews can be found on my thread.

thanks will take a look at the onkyo and denon and the yamaha 740.

The marantz 5400 is actaully £299 at Richer, and the yamaha 640 is £249.

Do these prices change your opinions?

I think I am going to bite the bullet and just go for the Marantz 5400 with the Modaunt Short Premiere's from Richer Sounds.

Total cost of the above should be around £540.

I guess it is worth adding at this stage that these two components work pretty well with each other (the premeire did a lot of its original voicing work on a SR5200). I also rate the Marantz as being able to carry a tune in stereo- not as common as it should be.

Bias aside, I think it will work pretty well. As has been discussed ad infinitum, premiere is not as good as the KEF eggs but it is of course considerably cheaper (and we've nearly finished our egg competitor). RS should currently have cherry and graphite available, the new maple and vanadium should appear feb/march time.
I have no idea what the "CD/DVD tat" to which you refer actually is.
