just (carefully) make a small hole (I used a very small screwdriver) in the centre of the red plastic bung then push the banana plug into the hole

There are actually covers on the binding posts which come off, revealing the holes for the banana plugs.

I just levered them off with a small screwdriver (IIRC, there is a tiny hole in the cover, just use that to lever them off)

Blame it on the EU regulation ban against banana plug. Since you remove the plug cover, it's now none of yamaha's responsibility.

This is an example of a banana plud Banana Plugs with Gold-Plated Contacts > Maplin

They connect to the end of your speaker cable, sometimes screwed but there are other methods. So instead of fiddly bare cable to insert and tighten in your amp, you have a simple connector to plug in.

The only issue really is amps usually ship with small blanking plates you cover the holes on the amp, and they are not always obvious, giving the impression that the amp doesn't accept banana plugs.
