Just bought the Titanium version of the above receiver ( HTR-5540RDS ) and have only briefly opened the box, not tested it yet.
Beginning to think about connections to my Toshiba 42" plasma that is on order and wondered whether the Yamaha 430 is capable of video switching ??
If so could someone 'very simply' explain what this is ??!!
Thanks for your time .........

I've got the same unit. I haven't tried the video switching yet, but what it does is allow you to plug in the VCR, cable box etc then run a single cable to the TV. Useful if your TV doesn't have enough inputs. Being a bottom of the range receiver the 430/5540 only switches composite video so it's not recommended for DVD unless you want to lose quality. The more expensive units do S-video or RGB/component.

I've been using a manual switch box up to now for the VCR and cable, but will eventually change to the amp. This does involve buying more cables as you will SCART to phono. You can get a six way phono to let you send signals back to the VCR for recording. The receiver has to be on when you do this.

Hope this helps

Steve, vey helpful thanks, I was going to buy one of the manual switch boxes (from Argos) but might decide to do what you suggest.
Am I right in saying that if I buy a scart lead with 6 phono plugs on the other end the scart will go into the video and all the phono's will go into the back of the amp ?? Have you seen any decent leads like this anywhere ??
Likewise for the Sky Digital box ??
I will be connecting DVD straight up to the Plasma with the JS VGA convertor.
Just remind me what lead I will require to connect the amp to the Plasma ?!! ( in simple terms ..).
Cheers Steve ..

http://www.beyondhifi.net have most cables at sensible prices. For the VCR the 6 phonos with be for video/left/right in and out. For the digibox you only need SCART->3 phono, but I think these are directional so make sure you get the right one.

I'm afraid I don't know what you need for the plasma. I'm a way off that sort of technology.
