Yamaha 3900 amp plastic top plate why?

Hi just bought a yam 3900 av amp which i am pleased with,but iam wondering why the top of the box is 2/3rds covered with what seem to be a plastic cover over the top of the unit anyone know the reason

It's a health and safety thing so you don't burn yourself.
You can take it off, no problem.
