Has any seen any reviews that compare these two.

At the moment I have a feeling that they are pretty much equal so my leaning is towards the Denon because I prefer its looks.

However, I would be interested in hearing/reading any more technical comparisons.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

Reading what reviews I can find, though most are the Yam 757. It looks like they are very similar. Couple of points.

    * It looks like the Denon does not do Video up conversion to component (may not be an issue)

    * Home Cinema tested the Yamaha 757 and noted that in 5 channel mode, the power 'drops' to 45watts - which seems pretty poor compared to others.

Most tests that I read prefer denon 2106. It is also about 100 eur more expencive.

I would go with Denon, ordered one myself but then there were some complications becouse at Technikdirekt they didnt want to send it to Slovenia becouse of some credit card stuf,,... Now I am a proud owner of Marantz SR-5500 :)

I read many reviews and like I said, Denon won by far.
You have direct comparison at www.areadvd.com.
Oh wait I`ll just copy it here, I mean the comparison part:

Bemerkungen zu den Wertungen: Pro Wertung sind 21 Punkte das Maximum, die das beste Gerät erhält. Die folgenden Abstufungen sind: 18,15, 12, 9, 6, 3, 0.

    Pegelfestigkeit (Angabe in Punkten):

    1. Denon, Kenwood, 21
    2. Onkyo, Yamaha, 18

    Filmton:

    1. Kenwood 21
    2. Denon 18
    3. Onkyo, Yamaha 15

    Mehrkanal-Musikwiedergabe:

    1. Onkyo 21
    2. Kenwood 18
    3. Denon 15
    4. Yamaha 12

    Surroundaufpolierer:

    1. Onkyo 21
    2. Denon 18
    3. Yamaha 15
    4. Kenwood 9

    Stereo:

    1. Denon 21
    2. Kenwood 18
    3. Onkyo, Yamaha 15

    DSPs, Nachbearbeitung und Equalizing:

    1. Yamaha, 21
    2. Kenwood, 12 (inkl. THX Select, Active EQ),
    3. Onkyo, Denon 9

    Bonus Denon AVR-2106: 3 Extra-Punkte für Bi-Amping-Option

    Punkte Total:

    1. Denon, 105
    2. Onkyo, Kenwood 99 Punkte
    4. Yamaha, 96 Punkte

Those were Denon 2106, Onkyo Sr 603, yamaha rx-v 757 and Kenwood 9090.

Like you can see even 757 is not as good as 2106, that means 657 is even worse.

Last month's What Denon... I mean What Hi-Fi tested the two against each other. They almost always plump for Denon in group tests, but this time they didn't. They did say the Denon was good too, but the Yamaha beat it in most areas. It was also said to be excellent with music. And this is coming from a magazine that almost never champions anything but Denon.....

It is very hard with those tests to determine which is better, I read about Onkyo sr 603 how good it is, and then other test that said they measured it`s performance in lab and they came to results of only 25 W per chanel when in 5.1 or 7.1 mode.
It is the same with Denon vs Yamaha, some prefer Denon, others Yamaha, probably the only thing to decide is your ears.
Most professionals will say go to the store, try them all and decide which is the best for your ears. People prefer different things and what is good for one may not be good for other.

It is the same with question which is better Mercedes or Bmw?

I have selected the Yamaha 657 over the Denon 2106 due to the ability of the first to upscale all video sources up to 1080i compatible progressive component output. This Yamaha function "future-proofs" my investment in the long run. Also, sound quality was about the same - resolving down to personal tastes about picking one over the other.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like they are pretty similar and each has its champions. One may score better in one area but not as good in another but the margins are small.

I will try and get a demo, but I've found this very difficult in the past (especially with lower end kit) so I will decide based on looks and price.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

The price of Yam 657 is more like Denon 1906 than 2106.

I can get Yam 657 for 350 eur but Denon 2106 costs about 500 eur+ so the difference is quite big.
