It sounds like your worst Gen Y marketing nightmare: rather than wait until E3 to launch the Xbox 2/Xbox 360, Microsoft is going to break with game industry tradition (at least as much as the industry even has a tradition) and take the wraps off their next-gen console via a half-hour MTV special airing on May 12th that’ll be hosted by Elijah Woods and feature a performance by the Killers as well as plenty of cameos by the usual round of athletes and celebs. Hardcore gamers might not like it (no one likes to feel like they’re falling trap to some lame teen marketing machine), but Microsoft obviously believes that this next console is too big to be launched at a trade show event—they want to start building buzz on a global level from day one

They probably hurriedly arranged that after finding out that Sony were going to unveil the PS3 hours before their original presentation at E3!

Cant wait to see the new console though.

    Same here :smashin:

Maybe Microsoft are going to try and brand it and market it like Sony did with the original PS.

So if it is unveiled on 12th May when is it likely we will be able to buy it? Cannot remember if ms launched worldwide with the xbox or we got it last.
I did buy mine launch day and it is still going strong. Paid £299 for console plus games and steering wheel all told around £520
did get the £100 worth of extras when they realised that no one was buying it at that price and so they dropped it to £199 after a couple of months. Wonder if they will learn from their mistakes and launch at a reasonable price this time.
    Cannot wait

I hope that hi-def will be via component and not one of these digital connections ie hmdi or dvi. It would be daft not to have it via component.

that colonies website is mental, the human clock page was very odd and the whole thing is far to cryptic for my liking, plus it's really only applicable for those yankie people as well, which is a shame.

I am hoping that there will be some digital connection in there somewhere. I have buried two DVI leads in the ceiling in anticipation of this. One is for my hcpc the other is sitting idle waiting for a next gen console.

    I'm a bit confused.
Should they stick to the tried and tested CD player technology as well?

UK MTV on 13th at 8pm. US MTV on Thurs 12th at 9pm.

As far as high def stuff goes: I don't know about component outputs, but I know MS has specified a HDMI port that will output upto 1080p signals @ 60Hz.

Not too sure if this means it'll have a bluRay dirve or not. Sony has been pushing 1080p as one of bluRays major strenghts.

We'll just have to wait and see. Exciting stuff though!

Well I must say - everything is happening on Poon's birthday this year - not only does Forza Motorsport get it's release but we also get our first glimpse of the machines that will replace those ugly blocks of Black & Crystal plastic that adorn our rooms!

So Poon how old will you be on this well publicised date?

First shots of X-Box 2 joypad???

Not sure if it's a prototype or the real deal and the photos are a little fuzzy but whatever (I presume it's not the finished product, the plastic looks too shinny and glossy, like a well worn Playstation pad).

What do y'all think? My thoughts:

    1) I hate the look of the 4 face buttons, way to small with too much space between them. Need to be flat and close like the PS pads.

    2) Like the sound of 4 shoulder buttons, hated the black and white ones on the current pad.

    3) Yay for wireless

    4) Memory card slots seem to be no more. I personally never used them so I don't mind, did anyone ever use them?

Overall I think it's pretty ugly as it looks just like the current pad, i.e. ugly. But who cares as long as it feels good. Also the console itself better be a stunner if it's gonna be white. Otherwise it'll be like a crap footballer warring coloured footie boots

There's also this supposed image of the console itself.

That's pretty good but the full show will already be available to download by then. Is MS definately gonna release the console over here around the same time as the US? I'm talking no more than 2 weeks here and in time for xmas.

Here's hoping MS don't waste anytime putting movies of all the game footage shown up on here

I remember being so insulted at it's ugliness when I first saw it that I played it off as a joke, refrained from posting about it and pretended I never saw it :nono: . I mean come on, that is really one the foulest looking "things" i've ever had the pleasure to lay me old blinkers on. I refuse to believe the finished console will bare any resemblance to that tool box, Micro$oft couldn't be that evil/stupid could they?

I hope not it looks like a petrol container! But come on they did design the X-Box and that makes a petrol container look very aesthetically pleasing indeed!

think they confirmed that the "handbag" looking one was a fake. the controller looks PANTS to say the least. all the people working for em and all the money being spent and thats the best these boffins can do tut tut. assuming its real.

yay for wireless tho but how's it gonna power i dont wanna be replacing batteries all the time. maybe a nice docking bay for em to charge a already in build battery

Yeah the controller looks far too shiney - i'm thinking that it may just be a pre production model. I did industrial design at uni and we generally made loads of mock ups before going to a final design. This is probably an early mock up. I hope that they get rid of the silly white & black buttons and put quad triggers on instead. This would not only be great for PES but also for racing games with the top 2 triggers for accel/brake and teh bottom 2 for gear change.

Batteries would be OK if they lasted as long as the Wavebird ones, as they last ages! Personally i'm fed up of docking units as they take up precious space that comes at a premium in my games room. Now if they thought of some funky design where they docked with the actual console then that would be cool!

I'm sure the controller photo doing the rounds now is a prototype, but maybe not a million miles from the final version. There are just too many similarities to the semi-official images on OurColony.net. It looks like a MS/Logitech hybrid to me...

One of the main reasons I don't like the PS2 pad is because of the four shoulder buttons - just doesn't feel natural (Pro Evo aside of course!). Driving games could be a difficult with four triggers, how would that work? I think the only way would be to have the large analogue as-now, with a couple of digital buttons within easy reach?? The "prototype" controller looks like its lost the black and whites altogether...

And as for recharging, I'd hope for a separate docking station personally, so the console can fit in my AV tower with my amp, DVD player etc, while charging my pads well out of the way.

Hate the new joypad. IMO the xbox controller is the best because of the rear analogue triggers, which makes control superb for the plethora of racing games xbox has.
