it wasn't but its all sorted now, turns out the extender cable they send is the part that doesn't work so i will just plug it in the front for my tower and not bother with the cable.

thanks for the quick replies.

Not sure why it's so large or costs so much because it feels like it's just a cheap plastic shell covering nothing, all the more baffling when the steam controller adapter is so small.

Just as an FYI rumble and audio through the controller currently don't work as they haven't released the drivers yet but they do work on the latest insider preview build so hopefully that gets updated soon.

Why has it taken this long to release the thing and then not have the drivers ready! Seriously poor MS, I thought they wanted to support PC gaming or did Win10 suddenly appear in their offices.

The Steam controller uses Bluetooth I think. The Xbox gamepad uses some bespoke wireless protocol, so that may go some way to explaining why its bigger and why its so silly expensive!

I won't be getting one :thumbsdow

Paid £14.99 from Game for mine which ain't too bad, saves me buying a new controller as I have 2 for my Xbox One.

To get rumble to work I did a system system reset. My driver version now is 20.24.34.491 whereas before it was 19.29.20.953, so before you go that extreme try updating the driver through device manager which unfortunately didn't work for me but others have said it did for them.

I'm not sure which controller to go for.

I was looking at the PS4 controller, but pulled back from buying it. Then I found out about some build quality issues. Oh, and there's no charger cable included, apparently. So I started looking at the xbox controllers and now this dongle thing. I would have preferred bluetooth, but there you go.

Is there something else I should be considering? I just want a great controller with very good build quality and no hassle usage with Windows and Mac OS.

Thanks.

I use the ds4 (ps4 controller ) and there's no issue with the build quality , may be the thumb stick wear down over time , but other that it works perfectly fine ,
i use it with input mapper :Home cabled or can be used with a Bluetooth dongle .( which can be a bit of a faff to set up ) .
I just start input mapper before starting a game , fire up the game then i'm good to go with in seconds . some games don't need the software , like last years AC or farcry 4 , but games like shadow of mordor and bf4 do need input mapper to work with in the game.

Well you won't be using this wirelessly with Mac OS as it's Windows 10 only.

@fluxo you should consider the Steam Controller, Pre-order Steam Controller on Steam, currently there are issues but it should play nice with Mac in the future.

If wired is no problem the Xbox 360 wired is probably the most versatile and the best bang for your buck. I think it plays nice with Mac and does with all versions of Windows. The Xbox 360 wireless dongle can be hard to find these days unfortunately.

The Logitech F710 gets good reviews, is similar to the PS layout but offers XInput so should just work like the Xbox 360 F710 Wireless Gamepad - Logitech. Or the F310 if you don't mind wired. Logitech's software very likely supports Mac.

I know some people have not had issues, but there are hundreds of complaints in the various forums and multiple problems identified. Threads:

Thumbstick wear
DualShock 4 build quality. This is baffling.

Videos on YouTube:

I will not buy a device with that many reported issues. When it comes to build quality, I have high expectations. It's a pity, because in terms of ergonomics and ease of use with a PC it sounds quite decent.

The Xbox One Elite controller looks promising. But the last time I checked it was out of stock and there's that annoyance of having to use a dongle. Maybe I could use it with a cable. I'm guessing it will be a mini USB one, but will have to Google for details.

Then again, maybe I should give the Logitech a closer look.

I actually did have an Xbox controller. Not sure which one now. It was wired and it has gone missing. I bought it to use with a particular game but didn't really get on with it. It seemed ok-ish and I think with another game to which it was more suited it would have been acceptable.

I have never owned a console so I am not really accustomed to using gamepads. If I get one, I think it will be a case of allowing an adjustment period. So used to mouse + keyboard by now.

Got an adaptor already for £12 when game bodged the pricing. Just ordered a standard Xbox one pad with the headphone jack from Amazon. Should arrive tomorrow. Using the old Xbox pad and adaptor in Windows was faultless. Supposedly all native in Windows 10 so a no brainier for me. I think if push came to shove I'd prefer the Xbox pad over any PlayStation iteration. Definitely not convinced about a £200 elite controller though.

The Elite controller. You can't even map extra buttons to the extra parts of the controller. Basically you can only move a button. So for example you can press the new paddle instead of the right trigger.

For games with lots of controls this is a massive let down. Esp for that price.

This is for the X1 at least. Not sure if it's the same for PC.

I'll get this and use a normal X1 pad wireless.

Agreed , yes loads have had this problem , including my self , but that's as far it goes to bad build quality , the ds4 is good very good , ( but that's my opinion , because that is what i have used in years )
What i have done when the thumbs wore down ,is to replace them with the xbox one thumb stick , their can be bought from ebay for about £2 or less , easy to fit ( if you don't mind taking the controller apart ) and their a lot better than the original sony ones and will last loads longer .
2 x Analogue Replacement Thumb sticks Analog stick for Xbox One Controllers

others will say the xboxone controller is better , but that's their opinion, i how ever really like the ds4 ,
looking at the logitech one , now that looks cheap and nasty compared to xboxone or ds4.

i wouldn't give up on the ds4 just yet .

Well after an evening with my pad and dongle setup I'm delighted. Everything works faultlessly but the killer feature is the headphone socket. Works perfectly in games but also in normal desktop use. Will tide me over nicely I get my speakers but pretty much kills the 3rd party headset market dead IMHO.
