Tied to work this out from the various threads on chipping and hi-def, but can't work out the definate answer...

Do any UK / PAL Xbox games have 16:9 gameplay? Or is it only import games, that I'd need to chip my Xbox to play, that support this mode?

    Cheers, Clive

No, most PAL games support 16:9 (more than NTSC anyway), so you won't need to get it chipped for 16:9, however you will need to get it chipped to unlock progresive scan and HDTV modes (720p and 1080i)

Other than "does it look right" is there a way of telling? i.e. my Xbox came with Halo and Midtown Madness 3 - do either of these games "do" widescreen?

    Cheers, Clive

No - both of these games are in 4.3. To be honest, I can't think of a game that is in WS...

Yes, both of these do widescreen.

In the xbox console go to Settings->Video and set Video Mode to "Wide screen".

Then just put the game in and it will be in widescreen.

Army Bloke, you must be doing something wrong :(

    Cheers,
    Liam

Halo doesn't do widescreen on my Xbox - on widescreen mode the aiming circle is still an oval when I switch my telly or projector to 16:9. Dunno about midtown madness, but most of my other games will do 16:9. I think most new games do 16:9.

Hmm, I'm embarrased to say I think you're right - I've been playing it in 16:9 mode for about a week now, and it looked OK, but setting my TV to 4:3 reveals that it is indeed 4:3

    I'll get me coat...

:) Well, at least it shows it isn't just me that's confused.

I agree re MM3 - aspect ratio looks correct in 16:9...

But thats for NTSC games, there are quite a few differences (eg, FIFA 2003 is 16:9 on NTSC and 4:3 on PAL, on XBox)

Midtown Madness 3 is deffo 4:3, You'd think that more and more games would support 16:9 but it seems than more than ever before are coming out in 4:3 format. The only Microsoft game I can think of that supports 16:9 is Prtoject Gotham 2.

If you have a look at most games developed in europe and japan (including PGR2) is in 16:9 and the US, decide not follow suit and are still churning out loads of 4:3 stuff, probably just down to the fact there isn't a big enough demand for 16:9 games in the US.
