I will in a few days time be getting my XBox chipped and hopefully upgrade the hard drive aswell.

A few questions I need to be answered before I install the hard-drive though.
    1. If the hard drive is installed can I play on LIVE! with the chip turned off?
    2. Where can I download the software to rip the games to the hard drive?
    3. Can the hard drive be any speed (rpm)
or does it have to be a specific speed

I was looking at the seagate barracuda 7200.7 80gb for £65
@ dabs.com, will this be a decent choice if I do upgrade the hard drive

    Thanks for any replies,
    Richard :hiya:

    couple of things first

buy a 120gig drive, or you will regret it, and get it from somewhere local, I got 120gig western digital 7200rpm for £108 it was £12 cheaper online after shipping. I had to take it back 3 times before I got a drive that could be locked. You need to lock it to boot into the MS dash and thus get onto live. So dont try and save a few quid by getting it anywhere that isnt local, if it doesnt lock you will be gutted.

I got mine from pcworld, they did 80gig versions for £69, these are the brown box ones they have not retail pakaged.
there is a list on xbox-scene forums of compatible drives.

as far as the upgrade goes, go to www.xbox-scene.com then to the forum and into the evoX section.
Look for a thread regarding Slayers Auto Installer.
there is info on where to get it.

you littlerally, d/load the slayers auto installer .iso and burn it to cd, put your new drive in you xbox, put the cd in and choose the set up you want.

ie new hard drive with chip that can be switched off.

this will partition your drive, put evoX and all the apps you need onto the new drive and put the origianal dash (including live) on there as well.

    job done :)

keep your original drive somewhere safe.

There may potentially be a problem with 7200rpm HDDs and the XBox - overheating?

I have gone for a Maxtor Diamondmax 80gig running at 5400rpm. I've been told this drive is lockable - but I'm not concerened about going online through Live so it's no big deal.

Get the X-Executor2 Lite chip and (if you are using the right chipper) get them to plonk all the utilities/emus on for you.

I was interested in getting an xbox a few months back and installing a bigger hdd and chiping it. I was put off by the hdd "swap" method where you needed to swap the drive about with a pc while it was powered on. Gizlaroc you dont mention it (only something about a program that can do it for you), so is that meathod now obsolete, because if it is i may need to go get myself an xbox :)

Just don't forget that with the new X-Ecuter II chips they will have the legal Linux Cromwell BIOS flashed on it... You can boot Linux but not EvoX. Just flash the chip using an X-Ecuter II multi BIOS and you'll be fine...

Now I know that at the moment at least I will not be upgrading the drive, but will want to in future. So with that in mind, will I be able to install slayers EVO-X auto installer v2.1 and let it do it's thing, or do I have to back-up the hard-drive first (to keep my saves game files and music). If so how is this done? do I have to link it up to my PC? and if I do at some time in the futre upgrade the drive will I have to repeat the procedure.

Thanks for all previous and futre replies,
    Rich

you put slayers disk in you machine with the chip on.

with the salyers disc you give your xbox an ip address, say 192.168.1.10

then ftp in with your favourite ftp program

    address 192.168.1.10
    user/pass xbox/xbox
    port 21

you will see the drives on the xbox

    c:\
    d:\
    e:\
    f:\

go into the e:\ drive of the xbox and send them to the pc in a folder, say

    c:\xboxsaves

then turn off the xbox, install the new drive

    run slayers

    reboot ftp back in

and send the saves from your pc c:\xboxsaves

to the e:\ drive on your new xbox drive

less than 15mins and all your saves are back on your xbox

Yeah, Ben at premodded is fine but anyone living near South London/Surrey should consider a guy called Franz who is excellent. He did mine.

He lives in New Malden, Surrey. I drove down there but he is willing to come to your home for £8 travel costs extra.

Chipping costs £60 and £10 to install a HDD you provided + all utilities.

Alternatively try http://www.londonconsole.com/ who are also excellent or even Saurian at the ntsc-uk forums (Maida Vale).
