Have my Xbox hooked up to my Yamaha amp via the optical output ( microsoft advanced scart lead ).

I'm hearing a low level crackle/hum . This is very unusual for a digital connection.
All other sources are fine so its definitely the Xbox.

    Anyone else experience this?
I'm pretty sure I don't get the hum when watching a dvd or playing a cd/wma. Only with games.
The Xbox has an xecuter modchip and a 120Gb HD.

My xbox output is great, DD 5.1 is a great feature from them with the right kit. I second the sugestion that it might be a dodgy conection somewhere but does sound very strange for a digital conection, especially optical.

I'd have thought the connection either works or it doesn't.
Likewise cable quality ( its a decent cable)

Could it be your optical connection has got dusty or fingerprints on the connectors?

On my Yammy amp, if I enabled any of the fancy DSP modes it messed up the XBox sound.

I set it to "normal" and it sounds bloody great (still 5.1 digital, of course). Setting it to "enhanced" or one of the DSP settings resulted in weird crackling from the rear speakers.

My XBox is hooked up via an optical cable BTW

    DTS works fine.
I never use the DSP modes with the exception of prologic2.

I'll have a look at the cable but I really can't see how a digital cable would exhibit a noisy signal : it will either work or not.

Ditto what he said - I have just the 2 phono leads for audio, but wanted to know if an optical connection straight to my Pioneer amp would sound better, and if so, where would I get one?

Well I got the microsoft advance scart from game when I bought the Xbox. Its got a toslink breakout box built into the lead that takes a standard toslink cable.

I have just bought an XBox and also bought the advanced scart lead from Game.

I have connected it all up with the optical cable plugging into my Denon 3802. I have configured my amp to input via the optical cable. The sound comes out fine only it doesn't come out in Dolby Digital!? It just displays Pro Logic II.

I have two games: Soul Reaver II and Colin McCrae II which both have Dolby Digital Sound. I have tried all the settin I can think of on my Amp but it still just comes out as PL II.

Do I need to set anything up on the XBox somehow to output DD?

I am new to this console lark so it could be me

    Anyone any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Daz

You need to enable the relevant settings in the Xbox audio menu.
