Hope someone can help, I am possibly doing something wrong although can't figure out what. When the console is switched on, it runs the green splash-screen followed by the image of the controller prompting me to push the silver X button to wake the controller. It then asks the region and network connection set up questions then quickly gives me the message 'your controller is switched off' If I hold the silver button until the controller switches itself off and then turn it back on again, the controller works for around 10 seconds until it once again switches off.

I have replaced the batteries as I thought it could be that although no difference. Have also power cycled the console with no luck. Can anyone help?

    Thanks in advance

Thanks for your reply Mark, the controller button is constant when the console turns on and does respond to key presses. When I get the 'controller is switched off' message, the controller is still switched on (lights on) I tried to sync it following that guide. EVerything worked as it should, 'flashing button until it is paired' although it still disconnects after 13 seconds (just timed it) Not sure why it is also disconnecting when hard wired?

That's strange, espeically when its connected.

You could try updating the controller settings (might take you a few goes to get to the option if it keeps disconnecting)

    1. Connect to Xbox Live.
    2. Press the Menu button.
    3. Select Settings.
    4. Select Devices & accessories.
    5. Select your controller.
    6. If an update is available, you'll see an option to select Update. If no update is available, your controller is already up to date, and you don't need to do anything else.
    7. If your controller does need an update, connect a USB cable to your controller and follow the on-screen instructions to complete it.
    8. You'll see an update progress screen.
    9. When the update is complete, unplug the USB cable. If you have additional controllers to update, connect them now, one at a time, select the Update another button on the screen, and then follow the steps.
    10. Press the Xbox button on the wireless controller to turn it on.

Thanks Mark although this is the consoles first ever setup (its new) I don't even have enough time to enter my wireless key before I loose the connection.

Are you able to connect it directly to the router (even if its just for the initial setup of the console)? It should then be able to connect automatically and do any updates (it might get fixed by an update to the console).

Sounds like a duff controller to me - when plugged in via USB, the controller doesn't use wireless, it specifically acts like a wired controller (i.e. no syncing needed).

Does the controller work with a PC (with USB cable)?

Can you borrow a second controller from one of Harry's friends to check whether it's the controller that is at fault or the console.? Just to check: are both the console and controller a new out of the box installation?

I don't know if this will help, but when I first got mine, I had to switch off at the wall to get it to respond at all.
I know it's the classic "switch it off and on" line but the power cycle does not always remove the glitches.
I would keep trying with the controller plugged in route.

I tried Mark's suggestion and connected it up via Ethernet... It did connect up quickly and prompted me to update the system with a 500mb update, the update downloaded OK then rebooted the XBox to install... It boots into the screen where it checks the update in order to install, then I get the busy spinning wheel, after a while I get the message "There was a problem with the update, you need to install the update in order to use your xbox but something went wrong"

I click retry but get the same message every time. After the 12 second wait, everything is unresponsive, like the controller has once again stopped working although there are no messages.

Curiously enough, I wired the controller up to my PC and it works without any issues, no disconnects or anything.

Well, different controller has the same issues, think taking everything else tried into consideration we are probably looking at a fault with the Xbox itself?

Right, was dealing with 2 issues (one now sorted) It was getting stuck at the update stage as one of my Ethernet leads was duff, replaced that and now I get the message that no updates are available.. continues to the live sign on section although now I get the original problem of the controller only working for 12 seconds before the controller looses connection although this time it just freezes with no disconnection message. It does this on my controller and a friends.

It does let you switch the controller off and back on again so you can continue although at the 3rd attempt it jams up and doesn't let me try again.

Sounds like a faulty controller. Have you tried the other controller?

If it's doing it with the other controller via USB then could be a faulty USB cable.

Try the other controller via wireless (make sure the batteries are the correct way round i've done this before!)

    Things I have tried:-

My controller both wireless and wired = disconnections
Friends controller wireless and wired = disconnections
    Various usb leads = disconnections
My controller on PC = perfect performance

Phoned Microsoft who talked me through everything else we have tried, then said it sounds like a console fault (possible console wireless element failure or similar)

Can't say we didn't try though, thanks all for your assistance.
