I have just connected my new Xbox for a quick blast on Burnout 3. The game seems great, but I can't believe how loud the Xbox is!

I have got a 1st generation PS2, one of the very first ones. I thought that was loud, but the XBox fan/HD noise is much louder.

A few people have commented on the noise in the past, but should they be that much louder than an old PS2? I have to turn my system up fairly loud to drown it out - it would be useless for watching DVDs on.

If they are supposed to be loud, is there a good chance that some are louder than others?

Yep, mine sounds like its about to take off!

Unfortunately I think they all sound like that. And you're right, it makes their secondary function as a DVD player pretty pointless.
But then, if your serious enough about your films and decent sound, you probably wouldn't be using an X Box to play them on.

I think that you can mod them with a quieter fan to reduce this - I don't have one myself but I seem to remember people mentioning this before.

They're louder than the PS2 because of the faster processor and the hard drive.

It annoyed me at first too, but I got used to it eventually (it just meant I had to turn my amp up a bit louder  )

The main source of noise from my experience tends to be the DVD drive. I now run the majority of my games from the HD to combat this and am far happier :) With the exception of the odd click it's pretty much silent ;) :)

If you want it quiter still, then the other option (as mentioned), is a fan replacement...

Interesting that you say that - what screen do you have?

I have the Panasonic PWD6, and it is almost silent until you put your ear behind the screen, where you here a metallic buzzing noise. I can't even hear my plasma over my Sony 930 DVD player. From my sitting position (about 13ft) I cannot hear either, unless there is no other sound at all from the speakers.

The Xbox drone is in a completely different league!

I think that mine is to do with the fan. The noise is the same even with the drive open!

yeah definately. The early v1.2 xbox's had both a cpu AND a gpu fan and were very loud. Later boxes (like mine) dont have a gpu fan at all.

Loudest thing in mine is my 80gb maxtor.

How old is your xbox, then? I only got mine last night! I suppose it was Dixons selling through older stock. I wonder how long they had that for.

I suppose it doesnt really matter as long as it is not faulty.

I've got a rev 1.0 xbox from the US and the only noisy bit is the hard drive (120gb maxtor), when playing a dvd I don't notice any noise from it (sit about 11feet away).

If you only just brought yours then it will be around a 1.4-1.6 model.

P.S Here's a comment I recieved yesterday via e-mail from the guy who lives below me (I was playing Burnout 3, and it sounds real good cranked up!!).
    ---------------
"Whatever the fudge it was you were watching at 7pm on Monday night, was LOUD! I thought it was an earthquake... :) "
    ---------------

    Lol!

I know what you mean - I had lost interest in gaming on my PS2, but the in game 5.1 on Xbox brings a whole new dimension to it!

How can you tell the version number - is it on the dashboard?

No you need to look at the motherboard, the layout is different for each revision. Yours won't have a GPU fan, it's too new!

It looks as though I may have an older one.

The box has adverts on the back for Sega GT 2002, Fifa 2003, and Colin McRae 3.

On the system info section of the dashboard it says copyright Microsoft 2001-2. The manufacturing date on the bottom of the unit is 2003-12-11. Does anyone know what version this is?

I am getting a bit more used to the noise now, but it still seems very loud. Are there any other differences between the new and old Xboxes apart from the GPU fan?

There were a few changes to the brand of dvd drive and hard drives but without popping the cover you'd be hard pressed to tell.

Thanks for all of your help.

I might try to get it swapped for a newer one if it will make it a bit quieter.

Swapped it for another one which is exactly the same!

I originally bought it at a very small branch of Dixons, but swapped it at the large Kingston on Thames branch in the hope of getting a newer one.

All of their stock was of a similar build date - my new one is 2003-12-09, with a Phillips drive.

I guess that there is no reason why the new 2004 ones should be any quieter as neither of these models has got the second fan.

Maybe it's just different peoples opinion on how they define 'noise'? If anything I'd assume the newer ones would be noiser. Xbox's drive the main cooling fan at about 7.5v I think, possibly the new ones spin it faster (12v)? to compensate for the lack of a gpu fan maybe, and hence make more noise?

Prolly not true but you never know ;o)

(I know there is a 12v mod for fans that run at 7.5v, if you need the extra cooling)

It's more likely the be the hard disk that's causing the noise
they use different makes of HD as well as dvd roms.

It sounds like the fan on mine. I can hear the HD and the DVD spin up and down from time to time, but the underlying humming noise remains constant.

The HD and DVD access sounds are very quiest compared to the constant hum.

If you have a chipped xbox with a facililty to update the bios, then you can vary the fan speed- which takes care of the noise (I have a DMS XBIT chip).

I've throttled my fan down to 65%- which is adequate to ventilate the unit, but ensure the xbox merely purrs- as opposed to "ready for take-off"!

you can even get special bioses and dashboards that dynamically change the fan speed, for example if when i turn on my xbox i press the power button - i get normal modded xbox able to do the normal stuff, if i press the power button then i get it so that the fan speed is low (10%ish) unless the CPU reaches my set temperature. It gradually speeds down as the temp drops back below.
works like a treat making the xbox a 'super' computer (in all senses of the word)

old xbox's (pre 2003) had a gpu and rear exhaust fan. Exhaust fan is about 70mm iirc.

If you have a modchip or a softmod, then you can use your dash to lower the fan speed (avalaunch, unleashx as well as xbmc al support this) I have had my box for two years now running at about 30% fan speed, cpu 55deg celcius in a cabinet with no troubles. It is easy to mod the rear exhaust fan to accept a standard 80mm unit, although you will have to dremel some studs off the bottom fo the case as well as remove a section of the hdd carrier tray. It doesnt affect the xbox whatsoever, but does aid cooling, and, as we all know, a larger fan makes less noise than a smaller fan at equivalent cfm.

The hdd noise is difficult to clarify, but there were different models of drives used. The quietest drive is the seagate drive, as this was fitted with a rubber vibration damper/noise reducer over the drive. Failing that, take some thin foam (like what they use to pack motherboards/modems etc in) and cut a section the size of the hdd, lay it on top of the drive and fit the top cover back on. You should be able to hear the difference.

    hope this helps

lol somewhat delayed post! to add to this 1.1's are by far the quietest i have ever used. I have had multiple of all versions except 1.5's. I find that Samsung HDDs are also the quietest drives and obviously Samsung DVD drives are the most compatable.
