My son got an Xbox one and Xbox live for Christmas from his grand parents.
Is Xbox live locked to a profile or console?

What do you mean locked ?

If you redeem gold against his profile on the Xbox One then he will have access to Gold and features and so will anyone else logged into the same Xbox One. You only need Gold for one console as it can be shared across all profiles on that console.

So the Xbox live is on the console, not the profile?
So if I activate it on his profile and xb1, he can't then sign into my 360 and get live features?

It's against profile but also now against home console.

You kind of get 2 licenses for Gold. 1 for profile and home console.

He will be able to log into your 360 and have gold no problems.

I put the live on his 360 in the end as we weren't expecting anyone to get us an abox one and all his games are in the 360
