I've had BTOpenWorld for over a year now, and therefore can move to another provider.

I'm thinking of Nildram, Zen, PIPEX or Demon as they all are cheaper. I'm just wondering if XBox Live will still work, or if it is bound to BT's network in some way?

(And I know the ISPs above piggyback on BTs network but that doesn't mean there isn't some filtering to only allow BT customers access to XBL).

Any info much appreciated - as would any recommendations for an ADSL provider with a short contract term.

I am with Nildram and I would highly recommend them, slightly more expensive than other providers, but the speed is astonishing. Get far higher speeds than my cable connection (not comparing 1Mb, which I miss a lot!!), latency is not as good on average though.

My friends on Pipex tend to have a higher ping than me and don't seem to be able to max their download speeds. Also Customer Service for Nildram is very high...... I suppose you have checked the www.adslguide.org.uk forums.

I'm on zen, works fine with xbox live.

    not sure about performance.
surfing seems great, but when setting up a game on ghost reckon it says it recommends four users, no more. is this typical?

customer service seems good as well.

I can also highly recommend pipex. Cheapest and had no problems with them at all. Even my ip hasn't changed since day 1 yet!
Oh, also you don't have to be tied to a contract.

nearly went with Pipex due to friends recommendation, but the setup charges were too much. Went with Demon in the end.

£24.99 per month, which is only £1.50 more than pipex (£19.99 is ex. VAT), and free connection (£60 on pipex).

You can supply your own modem, or they will supply with microfilters for £85inc VAT - Pipex charge £100 +VAT for the same)

Worked out that I'd need the Pipex connection for over 5 years to break even - assuming prices stayed the same.

Anyone reading this thread whio is deciding on adsl get a router and not a usb thingy, because you will only end up buying a router before long anyway.

and they can be had for about £50 now

Having contemplated broadbanf for a while I was told that I would need a static IP address for X-box live. But BT openworld, Nildram and Zen are all dynamic. I was going to go with PlusNet highly rated and offers alot for £22.99 /month. Anyone got any idea about this.

You do not need a static address for Xbox live.

I have a static IP on Nildram.

A word of note on Nildram, they currently have a few capacity problems due to delays from BT....... download speeds are fine but pings are not, should be resolved by the end of the week (fingers crossed!).
