If microsoft release an external Blue-Ray drive, HD-DVD is dead imo. However, the article sounds like a pile of crap, especially so soon after the formats were released. Maybe in 2-3 years time, but not now.
Also, microsoft would have to pay royalty to Sony for releasing a Blue-Ray drive, which seems unlikely.

I think consoles in the format war are fairly irrelevant anyhow.

MS dont have a vested intrest in either format but prefer HD over BR because its more consumer friendly.

Vista supports both, 360 can support both if theres need, as can the PS3 I'd guess, but I wouldnt expect Sony to about face like that. Sony have much more vested intrest in BR's success than MS have(HD partner, not developer) in any format.

Give it 12 months and it'll all be irrelevant too, you'll have cheap dual format players better than either console.

MS always said that they would consider the other format if cistomers wanted it, apparently they do. So why not release it? They are not a backer nor do they stand to profit from the success of one formt over the other, so they do both.

    Common sense really.

I could've sworn i read this a short while ago in a magazine. It was phrased completely differently and basically just said that Peter Moore conceded that if HD-DVD went belly up Microsoft might release a BD drive for the 360.

    Yeah it's a rehash of a non-story from January.

Of course MS would go BR if HDDVD failed completely, if they could make money out of it. They have no real brand loyalty.

This is all still speculation, HD-DVD hasn't lost the format war yet. Microsoft have always said that if Blu-Ray because industry standard they will release a Blu-Ray add-on, and why shouldn't they. If Blu-ray flops I wouldn't be surprised if Sony released a HD-DVD add-on for the PS3.

Both consoles are marketed as media hubs and neither want the other to have the advantage. That's one of the reasons why the 360 Elite doesn't have the integrated HD drive.

Say what what? theres two reason sthe Elite doesnt have inernal HD rom, performance (there isnt one that does DVD fast enough) and price. Internal BR drive is seen as responsible for the PS3's price shortcoming.

Unfortunatly the format war is not clear to the customer, who often doesnt understand Hidef at all let alone which format offers what (HD can be confusing to technicaly minded people even).

The current fact that both formats perform 'about the same' and for most people theres little difference is lost to rabif fanboi'ism too.

My preference is for HD DVD as its cheaper, less restrictive and made TrueHD mandatory(unlike BR), note I havnt bought into either format because (even with a decent screen) I dont believe it'll pay back in quality for me.
