Well...looks like the guy I got this XBox off saw me coming... And if he dosen't return my text's, he's going to find himself in the bad traders list...

However, seems the DVD drive is on it's last legs in the console. Sound drop outs in dolby digital (but fine through scart...), refuses to even recognise PES 4 and is very clanky and noisy... :thumbsdow

Does it have to be an official XBox drive that I replace it with or can I replace it with any DVD drive that I bastardise to fit...?

There is talk you can replace witha particular type of Samsung drive that can bu updated with the Xbox DVD drive firmware from the Xbox drive - however you have to use the eject button on the new drive and can't use the eject on the front of the xbox - also I believe these drives are now out of production (Samsung 616T - somewhere else may be able to confirm)

The best drives are apparently the old Samsungs - to buy an Xbox original of these is quite pricy (just check ebay) - however if you're looking to only play originals and not mod your xbox for dvd / divx playback off dvdr and cd-r any type of original drive should do you.

this place sells Thompson Xbox drives for £35 - http://www.neodiscs.com/product.php?xProd=637&xSec=71&jssCart=031931744968d574ad2b79292aa5d737

You can use any drive you like depending on what you want to use it for. To play original games then you need an original xbox drive (you can do a pot tweak but its very risky and not always effective to get normal drives to work) (the 616 is firmware upgradeable correct but thats the only one atm). If you want it for dvd/divx...etc (as mentioned by andrew) then any dvd drive will work fine.

    Some things to note:

    1) The eject button will not work unless it is a fully original drive

    2) You will need a power connector/splitter as the power cable on an xbox drive is different to molex

A have a spare Samsung drive but Ill have to investigate whether its worth me selling it, I can probably get back to you if you want.
