    Hi all,

Our Xbox has started giving the error - damaged or dirty disc, this has happened on Quidditch WC, Crimson Skies and SSX3 so its not the disc.

Am I looking at a dirty laser lense?

If so whats the best way to clean it or is it something else??

    Cheers

PS Xbox is out of warranty if it needs opening.

    There is some info here
    xbox repairs

I'd try one of the cd/dvd lens cleaners that you can buy for about £10. From what I have seen on some sites, a replacement drive will set you back about £65.

There is some speculation about the possibility of replacing the drive with a standard pc dvd drive, but I don't know how true this is. Do a search and see what you can find.

If you have a launch xbox MS are apparently offering free repairs as the original Thomson drives are pants. Its a massive issue and ms are aware of it, its worse with new games.

for more reading search over at the teamxbox.com forums..

    Result !

I rang MS, and sure enough, they will repair it for free if it's a launch XBox with a Thompson drive, as these units have intermittent trouble reading new games. They will send a courier to pick it up and deliver it back after 2-3 days (so a 7-10 day turnaround).

The only two things they stated were:

    1. don't send it back in your origonal XBox box, as you won't get it back

    2. backup your saves, as they cannot guarantee the HDD won't be erased during the process

So, in theory, a great service :)

Phone number for XBox Customer Services is 0800 58711022

So........ thanks SpeedSix for your advice :smashin:

    Taz,

Good result! Just out of interest, are they going to give a warranty on the replacement drive?

    Cheers for this info Taz:smashin:

I'm also getting mine repaired due to 'dde' on Top Spin every time I play it, damn annoying, but happy now i know i can get it sorted.

Microsoft's handling of this problem is superb, with the price drop we got a controller and games and now they are repairing this prob for free as well, top marks:D

Does anyone know how many blocks a memory card has?? I have 6941 blocks to backup, i'm hoping they take 8000:rolleyes:

    Cheers,

    Giz.

Ok, an update on my XBOX.

It was picked up for repair on Friday, i received an email on Monday saying my XBOX had arrived at their repair centre, on Tuesday another email saying it has been repaired, and today Wednesday my XBOX is home, WOW!!! Great Service

Now my XBOX is home, but can i really still call it my XBOX. The Hard Drive, DVD Drive, and Motherboard were all replaced  , and i thought i only had a dodgy DVD drive, which had a new 'Phillips' installed by the way.

I did end up losing my 'Halo', 'Splinter Cell', 'KOTOR' and 'Dead or Alive' saves though, but Microsoft really DO care

    Giz.:D

    An update on our Xbox.....

My mate was round with his box while ours is away for repair, decided to show him Quidditch World Cup but...no disc in the box!

Mrs Taz has sent our Xbox to MS with said game disc in the drive! :suicide:

This will be interesting to see if it comes back!

    Update on our XBox:

Arrived back yesterday (Thursday), same as above, it got new HDD, motherboard and dvd unit. It must be a standard thing. Lucky I saved everything to memory unit before I sent it away.

and guess what - they returned my Quidditch disk !

    Yay for Microsoft

    You do a great job:smashin:

Out of interest how many do you repair in a day? and if you can disclose this information?!, how come the motherboard's, Hard Drive's and DVD Drive's are all being replaced as i believed the problem to just be with the 'Thompson' DVD Drive.

    Once again sterling job:clap:

We tend to service somewhere around 300 consoles a day, but before you think "crikes !! thats alot" we serve the whole of Europe. Im afraid Microsoft would string me up by the painful bits if I gave away anything to do with their processess, so I cant tell you why we often change more than the DVD drive other than we do.

its because its not always the dvd drive thats the problem. 9/10 times its the motherboard. People are speculating its the mcp-x chip failing (the xbox's equivilent of a northbridge) because that thing gets damn hot with use. They really should have put a heatsink on that:rolleyes:

Anyway good job zero, keep up the good work:)

where did you hear that james that's intresting.

How come it seems to be with the thomson drives more so or is it because the earlier boxes (w/thomsons) have different motherboards?

I exchanged FIVE thomson xboxes until I got one that worked satisfatory, which was a philips.

I would LOVE to hear the exact reason for the failures.

to be honest i dont think anybody knows the exact causes. To say that the dvd drives dont play up is false - they do. But not nearly as much as you would believe.

xbox-scene.com has loads of info there.
